Thanks all for the kind words.
I put it on a 4 inch slab. Tons of rebar so I hope it stays put.

Are you worried about frost heaving at all? That's my biggest concern with the project I'm planning, and I'm trying to see if some of the advice I've been getting is really overly-conservative (as if the shed where a residence).

You have a valid concern. My problem is the water table is so close to the surface (lake level about 2 to 3 feet down below the surface) I decided it would have been a nightmare to dig for footers.
I'm hoping by "floating" the slab I'll be good to go. Plus, like you said it is just a storage shed and not my camp.

I guess this winter should tell the story for you on this score. Good luck - you clearly have a tradeoff to make, and it sure seems like a logical one.

What we used to do was to clear the top soil off and dig down around the perimeter about 15" .... then we would use plywood to create a form wall and pour the entire slab and the ditch in one pour. We would also use re bar to connect to the concrete in the ditch that we dug and wire in the entire slab. Poured it about 6" thick and it would "float" and rarely would have a crack in the floor. If I were to do it today, I would put plastic under the floor to keep the dampness down. That is what I did in my house cellar and garage floor. Dry as a bone during the dampest of weather.
