I have a bunch of trees that I took down. Most of the trees are in 5 foot sections or so. Should I just stack these up between trees or should look into some sort of pad or base like a firewood stand? I don't know if they will rot quicker sitting directly on the dirt. In the pic below you can just make up a wood pile behind the fence. I have a bunch of those that need to be cleaned up.

Long term (couple of years) I will buck and split the wood but I want to try and do all I can to make sure it doesn't rot prematurely.
Thanks for the help!

you need to get them off the ground for drying.I just put two or three down and pile the rest sideways or use old pallettes

Will it still dry if its not split? I guess it will eventually

I would pile it on a couple of lengths as ihuntbear suggested and keep it off the ground. It will dry if not blocked and split but it will take a long time. A tarp over the top will help.

Pick the worst stuff and use it for skids to pile the rest on, it needs to stay off the ground to be any good in time.

needs to be off the ground to not rot to early. The wood is uaually easier to split green in the case of oak. sometimes it will rot if it is not split rightaway as the moisture is held in, but i live in the south and we have 90+ degree temps for a month or more as well as very high humidity for months on end.

Nice woods you have there. Very peaceful looking.

Split, stack and cover the top to keep the wood from getting rain/snow/moisture from above. Stacked on a pallet will keep it from getting moisture from the ground.
If dry, then ants and decay will not bother. Some woods are harder to keep from decaying than others. Unsplit wood will take longer to dry so may begin early decay as a result.
