Wood Stove Essentials

I thought with all the folks adding wood stoves to their homes it would be a good time to add a post of all the basic other things you need when you own a wood stove and heat with wood. I can get it started and then we can add things to it. Remember, just the basic things to get someone started.

One thing to think about is your wood supply? I have several acres of property and live in a national forest so I have an unlimited supply of good hardwood in my back yard. My wife and I both enjoy being outdoors and harvesting firewood is a fun fall activity for us.

Here is a short list of what you may need:

wood stove
stove pipe (good pipe, not the thin tin type)
damper
fireplace kit (poker, shovel, brush etc)
ax or hatchet
firewood box
kindling box
place to keep firewood dry

Other stuff:

chainsaw
log splitter (I have never owned a log splitter, my neighbors share theirs with me)

Common sense wouldnt hurt. Perhaps there needs to be a thread on all of the "catagories" you list above. There is a vast amount of knowledge necessary for almost each of these that you list. For instance, the thin walled pipe that you mention as being a negative does have it's uses for exterior application. Recently there was a thread on "mauls" here and is still being posted to........

I sold wood stoves in the late 70's when oil got spendy the first time,must have hit $.50 or something ! I carried a funny article I cut out of the news paper that showed the savings of heating with wood. It went something like :

Cost : wood stove $500. Savings : Sold oil boiler $ 800.
Chimney. 600. Sold oil. 250
Chain saw. 250. Total $1,050
Used pickup. 2500.
New back window for truck 200.
Tow bill for truck 75.
New truck. 10,000
Hospital bill for chainsaw injury 800

First year savings : 14,925. - $ 1,050. = - $13,475 in the hole !


It was pretty funny at the time !
