They are out there! Just pulled one from my side. Must have jumped on yesterday.

Look your self over carefully. (Have the wife do it, she will get a chuckel out of it, You too ;-)

Yup, tic check can be FUN!

Permethrin is effective. Dose tissue, stuff it in toilet paper tubes and spread around. Mice come and nibble, tics on mice die.

You can spray clothing with it and ticks stay off.

Is it my imagination or is Frontline becoming ineffective for dogs? Helps a little with Wood Ticks but Deer Ticks seem to like the stuff! One has to wonder if Frontline doesn't do more harm to dogs than good? How good can it be to have chemical(s) soaking into the skin?!

We Frontline our 2 cats - they are tick magnets.
The stuff seems to work okay on them.
Seeing as we live within 50 miles of Lyme disease ground zero, we don't have a lot of options.

Found our first one of the season yesterday, on one of our dogs. Flushed it (the tick, not the dog).

I've never had much luck with Frontline... They say to put it on once a month but after 2 weeks it was gone. When I was working in Tick country (western Maine) I got into the habit of doing tick checks every night... normally I would find 25-30 per night. (before deer ticks/lymes disease was prevalent.)
Spraying daily with Permethrin was helpful against mosquitoes also, but lethal to fish; try keeping a lab out of water! (Although I doubt it would really hurt the fish population)

My vet recommended Advantage... a quick search indicates that it's only for fleas. (?) Last year my now 3 YO Lab was diagnosed with Lymes; fortunately they caught it early with a blood test. Right now I'm trying to decide what to use this summer.

Permethrin is your answer. This stuff is the bomb.

It does ZERO good to apply to your skin. It is for your clothing. Spraying is an option but it's a hassle. Instead, make a solution in a bucket and soak your work clothes. I think the mix is only something like 1/4 of 1 percent, so concentrate goes a long way. Don't waste your money on the Sawyer premix because you can make 50 times that much for the same money.

Treatment will last up to a dozen washes. Lots of info online about this.

OK ... Looked it up as a refresher because I need to treat my work clothes for the season.

The concentration you want is .5% to soak your clothing. You can do this with concentrates that range from 10% up to at least 38%. This is FAR less expensive than buying the expensive stuff in some big chain store. Just go to you local coop.

Having wrestled with Ehrlichia myself - similar to Lyme disease - believe me, I take this seriously. Soak your shirt, pants, socks and hat. Any ticks that get on your clothing will die very quickly. This also helps with flies and mosquitoes.

Yes, it is safe. The US military has been using permethrin for over 20 years. It is a natural substance and absorption though the skin from your clothing is extremely minimal if at all.

Permethrin is toxic to fish. Also, in liquid form it will kill your cat. Once it dries on your clothing, it is harmless to kitty.

Using 10% permethrin concentrate
1 gallon of water + 6.75 oz 10% permethrin = 124.75 oz of .5% concentration
Thoroughly soak your clothing and hang to air dry.
Ready to wear.
Wash by hand or on gentle cycle to preserve longevity.
Should last a minimum of 6 washings - perhaps up to 12.

I hate ticks. I have found them on me every day I have been outside since it has warmed up. I am pulling them off my dogs at an alarming rate as well.

I'm going to get some of that stuff and soak all of my work clothes in it. Maybe I will just soak my whole body in it and see if I can kill more of them.
