There is/was a vaccine for Lyme Disease. It was discontinued in 2002 due to complaints about side effects that may or may not have been related to the vaccine.

I'm also a fan of permethrin. We have clothes solely for the ranch that come home, get washed, sprayed with the stuff, rolled up and placed in a trash bag for the next trip.

Shop carefully. Many products with splashy names are convenient but low in concentration and relatively expensive. I buy my stuff at Attwoods in the equestrian section with high concentration and low cost. I dilute it per the instructions to blend a gallon container and then use that to refill a convenient spray bottle.

I do like the tainted toilet paper thing though and will give that a try largely because a like a plan and if it's evil...all the better.

I prefer the soaking method because it doesn't miss any part of the clothing.

I mix one or two gallons of the .5 solution in a 5 gallon bucket. Stuff in two or three sets of clothing and let it soak for a few hours. Hang it up to air dry, then put them through a short/gentle wash cycle (no soap) just to soften them up for comfort, and a low temp dry cycle. This treatment is very effective and lasts quite a while for me.
