A friend of mine is in the business of repairing and building wooden boats in Salt Lake City, UT. This is his latest, based on a 1929 Chris Craft, triple cockpit runabout. It's 29-feet 9-inches long, has a Mercruiser 8.1 liter motor, and for maneuverability, he added a bow thruster.

It's planked with African mahogany, and upolstered with blue marine-grade leather.

Very impressive. I've always thought those style of boats were the nicest power boats ever made. There's just no way to compare the look of wood with fiberglass!!!!

What's the name of the lake the pictures were taken at?

The photographs were taken at Bear Lake, UT. The lake is on the Utah - Idaho border, about 120 miles north of Salt Lake City.

WOW! Must be nice to have that kind of money to spend (& spend, & spend) on a toy. I'll bet that for what that cost I could buy a nice house, on some acreage, here in NJ!

Nice boat!

A boat is a hole in the water into which you throw money.

A racing boat is a hole in the water into which you throw thousand dollar bills.

An ocean racing boat is a hole in the water into which you throw thousand dollar bills while taking a continuous cold shower.

A restored or 'homage' classic wooden runabout is a hole in the water into which you throw thousand dollar bills while wearing proper dress and comporting yourself in a civilized manner.

Very nice looking wooden boat!
We go up to Port Townsend, Wa to see the wooden boat shows. Port Townsend seems to be the capital of wooden boats around there.

Scott had the boat at the Port Towsend show, then took it to Lake Tahoe for the Tahoe show, and then to McCall, ID for a show. He's wanting to sell it to finance a building for a new shop and boat storage complex.

The photos barely do the boat justice. When you see it in person, the nearly 30-foot length, and fine furniture level of craftsmanship make it a work of art. For example, if you look at the grab rail on the rear cockpit photo, it's been steam bent to match the arc of the cockpit coaming.

I didn't have a chance to photograph it at dusk - all of the cockpits have hidden lights so that you can get in and out of the boat easily in the dark.
