Ok, I took delivery of a WoodMaxx SB-60, and assembled it this morning. The assembly instructions recommend lubricating the chain with bar & chain oil. I put B&C oil in an oil can and tried applying it along the chain, but it didn't seem that much actually stayed on the chain, and what did only hit a small portion of the chain.

How do you apply bar & chain oil to the length of the chain??

Also, with the tractor off (pto connected, hydro trans, key removed) can I manually rotate the auger in order to access all the chain. I didn't try it yet. Don't want to damage something.

Thanks for any advice.

Personally, I would brush the bar oil on with a paintbrush. If you set your mid/rear pto selector to mid you should be able to rotate the rear pto shaft to access the whole chain.

Good luck

Save your back and buy a couple spray cans of the new wd-40 roller chain lubricant or
some brand of motorcycle chain/cable lubricant in a spray can.

Traditional April to November chain saw chain lube is not good in the winter months where
winter grade chain saw lube is better as it is thinner in viscosity and lubricates just as well.

You can use Fluid Film in the aerosol can or the liquid in a sprayer can in a fifty fifty mix with water too.

Its more important to make sure the chain is properly tensioned wherein the upper flight of the roller chain
must be tight and the lower flight of chain has about 3/16" of slack.

If you can simply let the mule idle with the PTO running or have a helper in the seat its just as easy to spray
warm diluted Fluid Film on the roller chain t with a hand pump sprayer AND prevent snow from sticking to everything
that contacts snow and double your casting distance.

I use motorcycle chain lube from a spray can on the chain. With the PTO shaft disconnected, I rotate the auger while spraying the chain. I personally would not lube the chain while the blower is operating via the PTO shaft...

I use Fluid Film because that's what I have. No problems ever. I would imagine motorcycle chain spray oil is the best since it is specifically designed for that application.
I found the best way to apply is to run the blower at idle and spray.

I also use Fluid Film and a small 1'' paint brush.... Chain oil spray works, If the can is warm it sprays better....

I always used motorcycle chain lube on my snow blower. It has a waxy consistency and tends to stay on the chain better. Spray it on both the top side and under side.

Another + for MC chain spray - it protects, lubes, adheares very well and goes on easy without the mess of lighter oils....

I've only used gear lube for many years on the chain. I apply it while the machine is running using the tapered fill cap. As the chain is going around I give it a good drink both at the start of the season and when it gets put away.

Many modern motorcycle chain lubes are basically o-ring lubers and protectors. If you don't have a o-ring chain, use a penetrating chain type lube not for o-ring chains. I use a chain lube made by Lubriplate.
