I've given up trying to find a used, inexpensive, compact tractor, in the local market, and have just decided to buy a new sub compact. I'm negotiating with four local dealers on a BX23, a TZ24D, 2210, and GC2310.

My New Holland related question is:

I've come to suspect that my immediately local NH dealer is a sleaze ball, and the next closest NH dealer is unwilling to order an aftermarket backhoe other than the $9000 Kelley brand line they carry. I may be wrong about my first closest dealer, but I suspect I'm not. Anyway, I've heard alot of good feedback on Corriher, and I'm assuming they post here on this forum. How can I contact Corriher for a competetive quote, and what is a decent price for a TZ24D? I'm looking for a TZ24D, the smaller MMM, loader, and Woods backhoe with subframe. I appreciate any info.

Thanks

Sorry, but I think I made a mistake. I think I want the TZ24DA, or whichever one is hydrostatic.

Two comments, if I may. What I have seen of the TZ's I think adding a backhoe to one would be a colossal mistake , both in terms of assembling a useful, functional unit and "tractor" longevity. Also, I have never seen a MMM be compatible with a subframe style backhoe, at least on a New Holland. If you really can't do without a hoe, forget the MMM and save your coin till you can swing at least a class II New Holland. The TZ's are overpriced lawnmowers, not much else.

Unsure who your local dealer is, but there is no Kelley backhoe for a sub-compact tractor that should sell for anywhere near $9,000. And for all the talk about Corriher, I don't think there are too many dealers who would refuse to come reasonably close to their pricing. The sales tax argument they present is a bogus one, as the Florida Department of Revenue is actively pursuing instances of out-of-state purchases of equipment. Apparently the out-of-state dealer is off the hook, but according to Florida law the purchaser is still responsible for payment of sales or "use" tax, and the Department is offering a bounty to anyone reporting instances of non-compliance.

By the time delivery/trucking costs are factored in, there should be no reason to buy from Corriher or others like them, especially if the local dealer is afforded the opportunity to do business with you. The one time your tractor fails and needs warranty work (and sooner or later most will) , won't it be nice to be at the front of a local dealer's line, rather than at the rear? And maybe even get a loaner or reduced-rate rental? Yes, dealers must provide warranty service regardless of the place of purchase, but their is little to compel them to do it quickly! In the long run it's worth spending a few hundred bucks to buy locally, especially if the local dealer is any good.

How many times has a mail/internet-order dealer ever taken the time to show a purchaser how to remove a front end loader or backhoe, staying with the buyer until he or she is comfortably doing it. How about instruction on safe and proper operation, service and maintenance of this investment, or provided free pickup and delivery for warranty work?

These services equate to dollars- dollars that a long-distance supplier need not spend. But you may have to sooner or later if you choose to buy from them to "save" a little money.

Drewtrac, technically you are correct about the "use" tax, and I have posted numerous times regarding this issue. However, in practice many states have no real mechanism to collect this tax. I have no idea about Florida and if they offer the bounty. Other states have no sales/use tax. So there are times when the tax issue becomes a non-issue.

Regarding Corriher, I bought my tractor locally, but many people do find that Corriher is not just hundreds, but often THOUSANDS less than the local dealers, so when the shipping is factored in, the price is still substantially lower from Corriher. That is not my case. But I live in a land that is heavily populated by Big 3 dealers and while my initial price quote was high, my closest dealer dropped his prices like a rock when I pushed him a bit on the tractor price. However, there are numerous posts from people all along the North East, Florida, and the west coast that have complaints of dealers that will not deal at all. You are mighty harsh in your words about Corriher, but you don't seem to find fault with the dealers who charge prices well above them and don't deal.

I do agree with you that local is better, but I also have come to believe that sometimes the only affordable answer is a company like Corriher or Tarheel.

I think if you read through some of the threads, not just in the NH forum, but also the JD and Kubota forums, you will find that regionally some dealers do not deal and that is probably why in some areas the minor brands are selling a lot of tractors and the big 3 dealers are losing market share.

Here's all the info. The NH dealer closest to me is Sunrise Tractor on Military Trail in West Palm Beach. I spoke with the sales guy on the phone, he asked what my goals were, etc, and we talked about the TZ21's and TZ24's. I asked if there was a backhoe for those machines and he said he had to look it up, which to me was perfectly acceptable. We then started talking price and I mentioned that the Kubota dealer in Boynton Beach had offered a BX23 for $15k, so that was the price range I wanted to be near with the NH and JD equivalents. He then went on and on and on about how crappy Kubota's were, and how much better the NH's were since they were US made (which I don't believe is true, aren't they made in Mexico?), and that you couldn't get Kubota parts, and Kubotas rust out after a few years, etc. That to me was just foolish, because frankly, I see a lot of Kubotas which were made many, many, years ago still running great. I really gathered no usefull info from this dealership, and after I hung up the phone, I still knew very little about the machines. The fellow I was speaking with basically said "I've got to go, I'll call you back", and hung up. Never heard back from him, it's been a little more than a week. The second NH dealer is Grower's Equipment in Davie, FL. They are both a NH dealer and Kubota dealer. They were very helpful with all my questions, but they quoted the $9000 for the Kelley backhoe. My visit to Grower's was nice actually because I could compare both the BX23 and TZ24 side by side, step off one tractor, step onto the other. Grower's was pretty competetive with thier BX23 quote, but are about $600 more than Florida Coast Equipment in Boynton for the same machine and a 54" mower deck. Also, Boynton is closer to Loxahatchee, where my house is.

I would prefer buying local, because in fact, taxes vs shipping cost is essentially a wash. However, getting competetive bids from any viable source seems like a good idea to me. The more I know the better armed I am when I do buy a tractor. Florida Coast Equip has been great so far with thier service, and while I was there, I even started looking at the 7610's instead of a BX23. It seems like alot more tractor, for just about $3000 more, assuming all the same attachments (7610 TLB and MMM).

I know Sunrise Tractor has a dealership up in Fort Pierce also, and in fact, my dad bought two Ford tractors from that location about 25 years ago. I could still go up there and check out the TC series since it's more in line with the Kubota 7610, but I suspect I won't since I'll probably end up with a Kubota. I just need to buy a tractor, I've been putting it off too long and my lot has languished and become a huge mess over the last two months.

Your dealer probably got super aggressive about dissing Kubota because the TZ24 with Woods hoe can not fall into the same price range as a BX23. Its simply a more expensive setup. The guy probably figured that he would be wasting his time to call you back.

I agree with what you said about the BX23, I think there are many people that should consider a 7610 TLB. Its a great value and a good step up.
