Woods TGS50 Stump Grinder Video

Thanks for sharing. I'm thinking about getting TSG50 but the bouncing concerns me. It's almost like the frame is not rigid enough. Another TBN member posted about this recently. Has it been a problem for you?

The bouncing is annoying but you can control it. I was taking the video and running the grinder at the same time so it got away from me a little. I have done about 20 stumps so far and i,m very happy even with only 17 pto hp.

I own a Woods and have posted quite extensively on it. I do think you are right about the TSG50 having excessive "slop" in some of the connections....thus causing it to "bounce". Bouncing leads to sudden loading of the engine / clutch and can cause some loading issues. I have learned to avoid it.

(In the video....the OP is grinding too deep without re-positioning his grinding wheel. He should have moved his tractor back to reduce the load...IMO.)

I grind mostly soft wood....so it is not as big of a concern to me as someone that would grind oak or other hardwood - IMO. Lately I have been watching some of my connections.....especially at the swing arm cylinder....and it seems way too loose. I think it needs to be shimmed or ?

In an effort to keep the grinder from bouncing....I have also removed my quick hitch (Pats) and have taken my lower links off the float position, and have removed all slack via the telescoping adjusters on my tractor. Helped allot. Still....some of the grinder joints are too loose IMO.

There are some posts on another site in this regard....where the OP has his grinder back at Woods due to sloppy fitting joints. I am awaiting his outcome.

Still....I have now ground over 900 stumps with my grinder - mostly older red pine stumps. I am still on the orignal set of teeth. For my purposes...the Woods is getting the job done. I can see that if I had more hardwood I may have some issues.

If I were looking to buy again....I may consider other brands as these Woods joints are suspect.

NYTZ22DA,
I'm the guy in the "other" forum with the TSG50 in the shop.

Thanks for posting the video, there aren't many out there for the TSG50 - It's very helpful to me for reference since mine has had issues. Other than a vendor's video mulching up an apparently soft stump, there are no references for performance on real hardwood.

My story - my joints were very loose. A tell-tale sign is the grinder "bouncing" independent of the foot/base that the 3PH attaches to. Both the base and the grinder should move in unison when the grinder "bites off more than it can chew" or something may be a bit loose.

For your reference, here is the link to my grinder in action on an ash stump (before repair).

Even with all of my unit's issues - it was an awesome tool. I can't wait to have it to up and running again.

Happy ginding!! Great vid!

Matt

DiffuznFlame, Glad the video helped. What did you do to tighten the joints on your grinder? Mind bounces just like yours.
Thanks, Dave.

NYTZ22DA,
I've taken it back to my dealer. I expect Woods to honor their warrany and make it functional.

Here is a link to a vid of my joints. If yours act like this, I suspect you'll be very frustrated in a few more hours of use (I hope thats not the case ). Shimming the gaps will help, but if pin OD/clevis ID mismatches are significant, I think its a challenge to fix without custom parts (my case in particular).

The joints must be tight side to side and with minimal slop around the OD of the pin to form a ridgid frame for the stump grinder. From discussions with other users, it's clear all TSG50's don't have joints like this.

A side effect of the chatter I expereinced is it dulled the teeth on the outer rim of the wheel in about 20 hours behind the tractor to the point they needed rotation. I don't grind much below grade (~1in) and don't have rocks.

I'm curious to hear how your joints compare to mine.

Matt

Welcome to TBN Diffuzun! I am curious to hear your outcome with Woods. Also wonder if there are shims or repairs in order to service those joints in the time to come.

Please keep me / us posted.
