To those that are building I thought I might share.
I first built my splitter about 25yrs ago and it was driven by the tractor pto. first used it on a yanmar 336D with the 1000pto speed. When I hooked it to my JD it was to slow so I went to a kohler, used, for power. 25hp. Well it had been used as a power unit for a sprayer. It was giving me some problems because of corrosion and other hiccups.
Well, I just put a 24hp honda on and omg, what a difference in engines.
I am sure a new kohler would do well, but I can say, I never expected the performance I am getting out of this new setup.

Soon as I can get someone to operate a camera I will post it working on you tube.

What the heck are you splitting...Sequoias??
I'm running an old tired 8 hp Briggs and a gear pump I found on my shelf and my back can't keep up.

Sorry, have to laugh. No not sequoias, large fir. Have a lot of them in the 3-4 ft range. I have posted the splitter in here a while back. My splitter will take up to about a 6ft dia block, no lifting involved, at least man power. I have an A frame with an 8000lb winch to do the lifting and a 5inch ram to do the splitting. If you go to you tube and look up plumbstriaight in wood splitters you will see it in action. That was with the kohler on it. Watch the spelling on plumbstriaight, I missed spelled when I put it in.

I have a 12 Hp honda on my 34 ton splitter. What a great engine. 2nd pull every time. Much quieter than most other engines. Kohlers aren't bad either. I have the 25 Hp twin Kohler on my 6" chipper. That hardly slows down at all with most wood fed into it. A little bit of maintenance goes a long way with any of those engines.
