Woodward Crossings' (Modular) TOOLBAR CULTIVATOR on Kubota BX2230 / PHOTOS
During January 2015 I began research for a Cultivator for my friend Carl Cornwell's Kubota BX sub-compact tractor.
Primary purpose for the Cultivator is weed control between rows of Blueberry bushes, spaced eight feet center-to-center, about 60" open rows. Secondary purpose is single row cultivating of vegetables in a good size garden.
I looked first at Everythingattachments.com. However, ETA's Cultivators are marked NOT FOR SUBCOMPACT TRACTORS. I spoke to Mike at ETA and he confirmed this, with the issue being Cultivator interference with Three Point Hitch stabilizers in some pairings, not Kubota specific.
Further researching, I found the web site for Woodward Crossings, physically located in Aaronsburg, Pennsylvania. Soon decided W-C's "Wunderbar" Toolbar Cultivator looked interesting and ordered same as pictured. Karen Fultz answers the telephone at W-C. Ms. Fultz is knowledgeable, helpful and accurate.
I purchased W-C's Wunderbar One Row Cultivator Bundle with four S-tines and 7" Sweeps @ $282. The default toolbar in the bundle is 2" X 2" X 1/4" wall X 48"; perfect width for any BX. Sweeps are optionally available up to 9" wide, which is widest sweep available for S-tines from any source.
I ordered one additional S-tine and one additional 7" sweep for Blueberry row cultivation. One or two center tines are removed for vegetable row crop cultivation. Cultivation depth is 3" - 4". S-tine Cultivators are engineered to SHALLOW cultivate. You cannot cultivate deep, increased draft force simply flexes S-tines. I ordered default 14-1/2" length S-tines; longer S-tines are an option, for tractors taller than a BX.
** If you want to penetrate deeper, research FIELD CULTIVATORS.**
The proprietary 'Wunderbar' component is the heavy-duty, Category 1 piece which mounts on the tractor's Three Point Hitch and clamps the toolbar perpendicularly in two locations. Photo #4. This component is $142 sold alone. Toolbar can be clamped offset in hitch. W-C rates this component for 85-hp tractors, so you could mount an 84" toolbar, possibly longer, for a larger tractor. With add-on 'extenders', hitch will accommodate a second toolbar behind the first. Other toolbar modules are options for the Wunderbar.
The longest box FedEx will ship without a surcharge is 48". Woodward Crossings will ship any length Toolbar desired but there is a FedEx handling surcharge over 48". Or, you can buy 2" X 2" X 1/4" wall steel tubing from your local welding shop or steel supplier. 2" X 2" tubing is readily available material.
Later decided to insert a 54" toolbar, in lieu of the 48", with the objective of cultivating down the 60" (+/-) Blueberry rows in one pass. 54" toolbar shown in the three photos. Soon will return to 48" tool bar so Carl can be more precise working close to bushes without damaging roots. Lesson learned: for most situations the toolbar should not be wider than tractor rear tires; maneuverability is more important than maximizing width of coverage.
The toolbar comes as raw steel, unpainted. I wiped off anti-rust oil with mineral spirits, then spray painted with one coat of Rustoleum primer and two coats of Rustoleum gloss black. Not up to my standard for finish but good for now. I will have 48" toolbar powder-coated Kubota orange before again mounting it.
This quite heavy three box purchase shipped user-friendly FedEx to Florida, about 1,100 miles, for a reasonable freight of $132. Had components been shipped in one very heavy carton on a pallet, Common Carrier, freight would have been closer to $300. And there would be the issues of being home for the truck, additional charges for residential delivery and unloading from the tailgate.
This implement has been highly satisfactory paired with the BX2230. Thorough weed removal/disruption with the ground left smooth. No tractor/implement interference issues. Tractor pulls cultivator through Florida sandy-loam in HST/HIGH + 1/2 throttle in 4-WD. BX has turf tires.
More pictures will follow. We were rained out this morning.
