Yes, I know those. They used them in brown coal mining. The north of czech republic was turned partially into a moon like country using these beasts.

There was a set of pictures going around the internet about a year ago that showed a big machine like the German one. One of the rotating buckets hooked it's teeth on a large Caterpillar dozer and carried it up to the top of it's rotation.
It was really awesome to see that type of power!

Well, I cant say I helped build that particular machine because I was still in HS in 67. But in the 70's the company I was serving my apprenticeship for Farrel Corporation, was contracted by Bucyrus Erie to build some huge gear cases for their earth movers, I remember some gears that we cut larger than 20 ft in Dia. I believe the gear cases that we built were to actually move the machine and power the tracks. It is hard to comprehend how big that stuff was until you actually see it yourself /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
