Would either 5 or 6 hp be enought to power a 3 gpm pump?

I see some 5 and 6 hp gasoline engines cheaper than the 13 hp and would like to get the cheaper engine if it would work?

Would a 5 or even 6 hp be enough to power a 3 gpm pump without bogging down? Would those size engines be sufficient for a little towable backhoe?

Or should I go with the 13 hp?

A single stage pump of 3 GPM and 3000 psi, will require abut 6 HP.

It depends on flow rate and PSI as well as cylinder size and actuall work realized.

Me, I'd get a 13 horse Honda and be done with it.

With a 13 HP, you could power a 6.5 GPM single stage pump, at 3000 psi.

A 13 HP motor could also power a 22 GPM two stage pump at about 650 psi, and about 7 GPM at 3000 psi

Probably not a good idea to use a two stage pump on a BH, as the speed and power would change as you approach the 650 psi switch over.

Using the 13 HP engine and 6.5 GPM at 3000, and a 4 in cyl and 2 in bore, the extension speed would be about 12 sec, and retract would be 8.8 sec, for a total cycle time of 20.8 sec

The 3 GPM will provide about half of the above.

Possible 18 ton using the 3000 psi
