I live on a gravel town road which is roughly the hypotenuse between two state highways. On a map it looks like a good shortcut to carve off a mile and a half or so. In actuality there are some pretty good hills, and and in winter the town only maintains from one end to just past my house. The other end is plowed but not sanded by various private individuals for their own convenience. UPS won't even deliver to my house in winter, and tries to avoid it in summer. When the trucker comes for a load of wood he always takes the long way out, and in winter the road needs to be just right.
Today I just happened to be headed down to the house with a load of firewood when I saw a propane delivery truck coming up through, obviously not aware of the hills ahead. I flagged it down and it turned out to be a woman driving. I told her what laid ahead and that she really needed to turn around, and told her that there was a good spot just up the road. I couldn't hear a thing that she said over the sound of the diesel, and of course there's no way that she was going to shut it off on a lonely dirt road after an admittedly scruffy looking guy had flagged her down.
I'm just thankful that I happened to be in the right place at the right time, because the last thing that I want to see is a propane truck upside down in the beaver pond at the bottom of the hill... and I know all too well what it's like to slide down over it out of control on the ice... in a pickup or on my chained up tractor.
