Man killed when his tractor falls off cliff, lands on him

JUNIOR -- A man working on a tractor was killed in a bizarre accident Friday, when his tractor fell 25 feet from a cliff and landed on top of him.
Barbour County Sheriff's Deputy John Hawkins said James T. Talbott of Junior was operating a farming tractor in Tacy when the vehicle slid over a cliff.
Talbott fell from the tractor, which then landed on top of him, killing him instantly.
Hawkins said Talbott was trying to remove tree stumps from a field and dump them over a cliff when the accident happened.

I have a lot of family in Barbour County. There's a small town called Philippi where most of them live. I've never been to Junior or Tacy though.

I'll be down there next month so I'll ask them about it.

I was mowing my lower section this past weekend and I've got a nice 8'-12' drop off right next to the road. I was paying close attention to the rear wheels as the ground was pretty soft down there. Timely reminder for sure.

A few days ago my neighbor was pushing brush over an embankment at his house. When all of a sudden he went to far and he and his B2400 went 50 feet down a 70 drg incline. He was not wearing a seat belt but there was no roll over or damage to the tractor. He knew that I have a winch on mine so when he called I went and winched it out. Then I gave him a saftey lecture. He said that his underware was still clean after the mishap but I think he was lying.

Junior is on Rt. 250 S of Philippi, very close to the Barbour-Randolph Co. line.

Then I have been through it, on my way to Buckhannon (my last name too!).


Turns out I'm heading down there this weekend instead of the end of next month. I'll be sure to ask if anyone knew him. Really is sad, I sure as heck hope he didn't have small children. I know mine are the reason I go through the hassle of ROPS and seat belt now that I actually have them.
