I was asked to post some information about X10 home automation, so here it is. Enjoy.

X10 is a home automation technology that works by transmitting a signal over the existing AC wiring in your home. There are two basic components to X10. Receivers(sometimes called modules) and transmitters. Receivers can operate lamps, appliances, home entertainment systems, just about anything. A typical use for X10 would be to automate a lamp. To do this, you would assign an address to a lamp module, plug the module into the wall outlet, then plug the lamp into the module. Lets say you give the lamp module the address of A1. Now you can plug a transmitter into any other wall outlet. A typical transmitter has a keypad on it. The keys can be assigned addresses as well. Assign A1 to one of the keys on the key pad. Now you can use the keypad to turn on or off the lamp module that we assigned A1. Some keypads also have dim and brighten.

You can assign any number of modules with the same address. So if you wanted those neat little electric candles in every window of your house, you could plug them into X10 modules and assign them all the same address. Now, with one push of a button, all of the candles will come on at the same time. You don't have to walk around your house and plug them all in, or set a timer for each one.

Speaking of timers, some X10 transmiiters have built in timers. So you could have the Christmas lights come on at 6 in the morning and turn off at 8 and come back on at 5PM and turn off at 11pm. You can get more elaborate controllers that have dusk to dawn that adjust as the days get longer and shorter. Then the lights can come on at dusk, stay on until 11pm, and come back on agian at 6am and stay on until dawn.

They make heavy duty appliance modules and wall outlets as well. I use one for my pool pump. It turns the filter on about an hour before I come home from work and runs it until 9pm on weekdays, and runs it continuosuly on Saturdays and Sundays.

I also have a remote control that runs all of the TV/VCR stuff as well as controls the lights in the house. So I can sit on my butt, watch TV, dim the lights in the living room and turn off the lights in my kids room so she goes to bed without getting up from the couch.

It is inexpensive and easy to set up.

Might be handy for tractor heaters! Especially if a temperature sensor could be incorporated into it. If the temp out in the barn is below X, then turn on the heater at 4am and turn it off again at, say, 8am. Hmm.

Will check this out.. thanks.

MossRoad,

Wow... X10 can do a lot of neat stuff. Hmmm.... I can forsee some automation in our home. Need to schedule a conference with the CFO./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

They make 110 and 220 outlets as well as temperature sensors and thermostats. Check out the links.

Oh yeah, they also sell battery operated wall switches that you can stick just about anywhere. They are wireless.

I've got the window candlelight set-up lust like MossRoad described (hmmm, wonder where he picked up that example /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif ). We have lots of windows and my (hey, they just came on!) wife really likes the lights. A couple of years ago I was ready to throw them out since turning them on and off was such a hassle. Instead, I hooked them all up to X-10 modules and added a very simple (< $30) controller with a photocell. I also converted our outside house lights and they run off the same controller. Now the window lights stay in year 'round and come on every evening. I turn them off when we go to bed as the light bugs me but when we're away they go off by themselves at dawn.

On an X-10 utilization/complexity scale of 1-10 I'm at about 1 1/2. It is truly amazing what you can do with this stuff. It will tie in to your PC and modem. If you are away, you can have it set up to dial in remotely and turn stuff on/off. You can turn your heat way down and call in to have it start warming up just before you make the final descent into your airport. There are a lot of home security elements as well.

I plan on using more of the technology in our new house /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

BTW, the "smarthome.com" link that MossRoad referred to is the most user friendly/informative for newcomers /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

How do you overcome the 100' transmitter limitation? I have a garage (located approximately 130') from the house and am interested in a X10 remote camera for security. Any thoughts?

Larry,
I have an X10 color camera with RF transmitter, a receiver, something called a VCR commander, something called a Hawkeye motion detector all for $79. In a weak moment I clicked on one of the X10 banner adds and wham bam $79 dollars poorer.

The camera runs on a wall transformer which can be controlled (on/off) from the power line controller mentioned above(I don't use this feature) It has a wireless (radio link) to the receiver in the house. The motion detector has an RF link to the VCR commander. You can teach the VCR Commander the control codes for your VCR from your remote VCR contoller.

I have it configured this way. TV camera is always on, when I switch to the Aux input on the TV I see what the camera see's. If the battery powered motion sensor detects motion the VCR commander turns on the VCR, places it in the record mode and records the video for 5 minutes and turns the VCR Off. If motion is present during the record time the 5 minute timer resets and continues for another 5 minutes. I have a clear piture from the barn ~ 250 feet away. The IR detector is good for about 75 feet IR detection and 100 feet RF.

I view the recordings (Fast fwd) each day and so far I have caught the gas man delivering propane and the dogs running on and off the front porch a zillion times.

This weekend I am going to set it up to catch the darn dog that keeps getting into to the trash can on garbage day. I set it out by the road for pick up. I hope it's not one of my dogs, because it gets into the neighbors cans also. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif I'm sure all of the neighbors think it's not their dog.

My garage is 140' from my house and the signal gets out to it just fine. You can also use x-10 devices to operate dust collectors in a wood shop.
