Hello all, wanted to start off by saying I love the site and have learned a lot just from browsing the last few days. Thanks in advance for any and all help here.

So I have just bought an old 1890's farm house in northern VT; It's got 3 acres with one decent (20°-25°) slope near the back of the lot, a few trees and a decent sized driveway. I want to use the tractor to mow (obviously,) as a snow plow in the winter and the wife wants to be able to tow a 10P cart for soil/mulch/plants/etc. Also we would rather spend what it takes upfront to get a good piece of equipment that can last 15 to 20 years minimum with proper maintenance. We chose to go with JD since the dealer is so close and their customer service is second to none from everyone we talked to.

After a trip to the local dealer I walked away unsure of what we really need. They have X300/48" deck for $3300 which I thought should be enough. After reading to 'Decide what you need and buy the next size up' I went back and took a second look. Great news is they had a brand new X340/54" discounted to $4300 (close to the price of the X320) so I thought that was a no brainer w/ the upgrade from the K46 to the K58. They also got the X500 for about $5300.

So I am assuming the 300 is not enough and trying to decide if I need the 500 or if the 340 will do the job. My main concern is plowing ungodly amounts of heavy, wet snow after a big storm with the 44" two stage blower on the 340, year in and year out for 20 years!

Will the cold temps stop the transmission from getting too hot? Will I be taxing the tractor too much and really need the 500? Also in the summer it can get pretty hot, though I plan on tapping the K58 case to be able to flush it and change the oil if cannot be done stock, will the 340 be able to handle 2-3 hours in 90°-100° heat without straining the K58 too much?

Any and all advice is welcome. We just moved in this Monday and it's not gonna be long before we have to mow so we got about a week or so to make a decision.

I can't comment on whether the X340 is enough, or if you should go X500. But I can tell you this: The X300 is absolutely, positively NOT enough for what you want to do. Not even close. You'd blow that tranny to smithereens in less than 5 years.

You can spend a few thousand; right now and start mowing your new lawn!

And then, later on this winter - you can spend a few hundred dollars hiring the snow plowing and removal out to a contractor.

'Cause neither the 300, 340, or the 500 are very likely to stand up to those VT winter's for the next 20 years!

If I were spending MY money to caretake a 3 acre lawn with a pretty significant hill and dealing with major amounts of snow and cold - I'd be looking for a small, tractor.

Aside from the second childhood thing, I also started looking at a small riding mower and finally purchased an open station 3320 with 72" MMM FEL and Back Hoe - for approx 2.2 acres. Never regretted the decision. Matter of fact, a couple of time when I maxed out the FEL, I thought a 4x20 might have been a better choice.

Agree with AKFish, If you go with the riding mower, I suspect you'll regret the choice when the snow flies. You may not need a BH, but a FEL will prove invaluable.

Hiya,

I live in NH with just about the same type property, forget about the lawn and garden tractors, get a compact tractor.

More specifically, buy my 2520 that's for sale in the classified section with the mower, blower and loader plow I have for sale as well, it will go right through the snow and cut grass better than a little lawn tractor.

Thanks for the input!

I guess we need to start shopping around for some sub compact tractors, only problem is the jump in costs as we were nearly at our max price range already. I think it might be a great idea to get a box store model and use it for this season, then pay for snow removal (as most people on our street do) while we save up cash and get what we need next year. Then we could sell the box store one for a bit of a loss, recoup some costs but minimize our losses overall.

That is unless we find a really good deal or go to the bank. I'll check the classifieds here and see whats around also, but thanks again for all of your help everyone!

Dupy,
You might want to check out Deere's 0% for 48 month financing on the small tractors. Also just about any major purchase from Deere qualifies for 12 month no interest.

I would think a 4x4 700 series or subcompact would all work for you. I have the x749 which I am very satisfied with.

Don't expect "a bit of a loss" on a box store tractor. Everyone selling one is doing so because they are unhappy with them and want them gone.

If you go that route, plan on running it until it breaks while you save for a compact.

Yup, a 2520 would be just the ticket.

I would also add that once you get a compact or sub-compact tractor, the project list has no limits. True joy.
