john deere, x304
I'm brand new, so haven't been too involved with the site, but did find my x304 tranny rebuild site here. So I've rebuilt it, and it is doing fine so far (with only about 6 hours on it) but had a burr in my butt of sorts, and wondered if anyone else has tried this:
1. Saw a x500 multi-terrain mower, and loved it, but not the price
2. I love my x304, but not the tranny
3. X304 has about 225 hours on it, from my multi-terrain acre, which my LT155 pulled just fine for 11 years
4. I'm working on my 3rd tranny for the x304 so I have no confidence with these trannys on my 6 year old mower

Here's the question - has anyone had an x304 that they trashed their tufftorq k-46 tranny and installed another tranny with some real beef behind it? Did it work well?

Thanks in advance. brian

Hello Brian,

I am new to this forum. I have been researching the x304 as a possible replacement for my 1988 JD 265 with a failed engine. I had been reading about the tranny problems and saw your post.

In my research about the various transmissions I saw an upgrade kit for the tufftorq K46 to a tufftorq K66 for the John Deere x300 series. I am not sure if it would apply to your model with the 4 wheel steering but perhaps it is worth checking out.
Upgrade Kit for John Deere, Husqvarna and other mowers
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. You're thoughts are correct, though - this is not available on the x304. Besides, it is very pricey. I think I would look for a used mower for the price they charge. Brian

Your LT 155 had stronger transaxle k51. Being that this is your 3rd transmission, your hills are obviously too much for your x304. Now that you have it working you could consider selling and upgrading to new or used x534- still get 4 wheel steer, 24hp kawi engine and K72- no problems with multi terrain property. If you want to go new wait till winter when JD runs the 500 bucks off and free financing
