X475 MOWER DECK

I HAVE A 2006 X475 WITH A 54" DECK. RECENTLY, SHORTLY AFTER I FIRST ENGAGE THE MOWER DECK, IT WILL POP, ALMOST LIKE A BACKFIRE, AND THE DECK WILL DISENGAGE. I CAN RE-ENGAGE IT AND IT WORKS FINE. ANY IDEA WHY IT IS DOING THIS?

Do you hose off the deck between uses or leave it outside? It could be popping off some surface rust on the moving parts the first time you engage.

Sounds like a sticky relay in the safety circuits. Once you excercise it all is well. Any warranty left on that machine? It may be time for a dealer visit.

Bad spindle bearing? Is the shaft hooked up completely to the PTO? I would think that loud a noise has to be mechanical.

Bob, how long does it run before it goes pop and turns off? In other words, is it actually getting the blades turning the first time you try it?

In any case, first thing to do is unhook the deck driveshaft. Do the blades then turn reasonably freely by hand? If not, you need to fix that before trying anything else.

Assuming the blades turn easily, then with the driveshaft still unhooked, engage the PTO - does it still do the popping thing? Unfortunately that could point to a problem with the PTO solenoid or the PTO brake.
