I am at 41 hrs on my X585, so I got the 7 qts of Hydraulic Oil and a filter from the dealer. Old oil drained out just fine. I then replaced the bolt and filter. I tightened the filter per the manual, though I thought it "felt" like it was too tight. Filled up the oil. Checked the level and all was fine.

I then took the tractor out to mow. No problems or unusual noises.

Started the tractor up the other day and the SCV and tranny sounded a little noisy. So before mowing I checked the tranny oil. IT WAS BONE DRY!!

On inspection of the oil filter the outside "felt" a bit oily. No leak apparent on the ground or around the frame.

Could I have tightened the filter "too much" and then under pressure all the oil was "spit out"? My thought is the gasket was compressed too much.
I am getting more oil and a new filter to try again.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

I was taught to wipe a very thin layer of oil on the gasket with my finger before installation. Usually, 1/4 turn after it stops turning by hand is plenty of torque, but I certainly don't want to give advice that is counter to your manual. Cleanliness is vital around that joint also.

You would of had to really extreamly over tighten to cause a leak. here is something you could check . i have seen this happen on car oil filters. check to make sure the old rubber seal did not stick to the tranny. and that there is only one rubber seal. this would cause a leak. also make sure your new filter had a rubber seal on it as well. also i would check the mounting surface of the new filter opposed to the old one. just to make sure thay gave you the right one. ..;)

Chuck , you would be correct on this.....:)

Yes I did place the oil on the gasket before installing the new filter. I also was concerned about remains of the old gasket on the tranny housing so before install of the new filter I checked and cleaned that area.

The manual recommended 1/4 to 1/2 turn beyond "hand tight". I did that, but that is a subjective thing.

Someone suggested to me that to simply fill up the tranny to see just how low it is. Their suggestion was the oil filled voids in hydraulic cylinders, etc. That sounds good, but it seems to me that if Deere says the capcity is 7 qts. And I placed 7 qts. in the machine, then that should be all to do.

Maybe I will call the dealer service dept and ask them.

Thanks

Are you saying you tightened it as much as you could by hand, and then 1/2 turn farther with a wrench? If so, you may well have overtightened it. I believe the manual says to tighten 1/2 turn after the filter initially contacts the transmission mounting surface. I was always taught that you never tighten spin-on filters with a wrench, only by hand.

No, sorry I wrote that incorrectly. What I was attempting to say was I tighteded it to a "snug fit' then another 1/2 turn. All by hand.

Just called the dealer svc dept. They claim if it was overtight I would see leaks on the floor, which I do not.

They claim it is 1/2 qt low. I told them the dip stick level is no where near the marks. It is way at the bottom edge of the stick. He said that sounds like a 1/2 qt to him.

So I will by some oil and top off first before I do another filter replacement. I will see where it goes from there

I agree with TimS on the tightness... "initially contacts the transmission mounting surface" before hand tightening 1/2 turn.

Excellent! Based on the additional information, I don't think you have a problem, and there's no need to change the filter again - I think you have just been filling in the nooks and crannies in the transmission and hydraulic circuits. The dealer is right about the dipstick marks; it does not take a whole lot of fluid to go from the low mark to the high - kind of a pain in the neck to get it right, without overfilling.

Just a related comment...

When I did my 50 hour service on my 2210 way back when, after changing the filter, and filling with fluid, I had a heck of a leak at the filter housing.

Long story short, and some unrecoverable fluid - here the filter had 2 gaskets on it - which I had not noticed when installing it.

From now on, I look closely at any filter checking the gasket for sure.
