John Deere X728
I have a 2012 John Deere X728. Today I was mowing and 1/2 way through my yard (3 acre yard), I stopped to get a drink. When I came back out, the PTO switch would not engage the deck. The PTO light also does not light up on the dash. I checked the fuses and all 4 fuses seem to be fine. Any thoughts? thanks

Maybe rock the drive pedal /brake pedal back and forth. Thinking something like it believes the drive is in reverse or the park brake is on. Simple for you I hope!

Might check the switch itself with a vom.

any chance things got hot, screens/radiator partially plugged could lead to an overheating condition which
will shut down PTO operation first.
and the reverse pedal RIO switch could be out of adjustment.

Had this happen on my 2014 X750. Shut off tractor, then restart. It seemed to reboot the entire system, then my PTO went back to normal. I had somehow by accident violated some safety item. With the PTO off, engine shut down, then restarted, everything went back to normal. It did have me scratching my head for a few moments. Hope this helps. Also, the 3 cylinder diesel is a beast, and loves off road diesel fuel. When spooled up WOT to mow is almost like it is electric it runs so smooth. All synthetic oils, and greases. Even in the deck transfer box. What a mowing machine it is. 60HD (9 iron deck)

Five days have passed. Tjvaivre, did you solve your problem? What was the fix?

You didn't by chance have the parking brake set when you tried to activate the PTO, did you?

Just last week a friend of mine came to my house all flustered. Only had his X758 two days and then his PTO wouldn't engage. When he told me he had the parking brake set, a light bulb lit up in my head. I showed him on my X758 that the PTO would not start with the parking brake on and how the PTO would cut out if you engage the parking brake while the PTO is still running.

It appears to be an overheating issue. cleaned out the radiator and let it sit for awhile. Everything seems fine now. thanks for the help

Yea, those screens need blowing out very often. Glad that's all it was. I blow my screens out when my temp gauge goes to halfway point. I put the leaf blower to all of it. Remove screen, blow both ways through radiator, etc.......do entire tractor. Rear, deck, engine.

And then after you've finished checking all the complicated stuff, go back and check the simple stuff.

I had the same problem on my dads X728. PTO not engaging. I checked the seat switch, the brake switch, all the fuses. Nothing, nothing, and nothing. Then I looked at the PTO switch. The wiring harness had fallen off. The switch was connected to nothing. Duh!
