Does anyone know if the forward max torque is the same as the reverse max torque. I ask this question because I have been using my X748 with a tow hook on the front (using a tow strap and a brush grubber) to pull small shallow rooted invasive honey suckle shrubs. I use it in reverse so I can see what is going on and gauge if the gear is holding onto the stump. Also in reverse, the pulling puts down pressure on the front wheels as opposed to trying to pull a wheelie, thereby reducing the traction of the front drive train.

I did run into several stumps that exceeded the reverse pulling ability of the 4WD JD X748. The HST simply stops pulling, which means the HST is going into pressure relief. Before I remove the tow hook from the front and move it to the back I was just wondering if I would get more torque going forward? The tires are not slipping, I have 220 LBs of Rim Guard in the tires, as well as my own svelt 220lbs :) in the seat. The HST simply stops pulling. I submitted a question to Tuff Tork, the HST manufacturer, with no response. The Deere spec page only lists the torque, not specifying forward or reverse.

Thanks to all.

If you are going into over pressure relief without spinning the tires, Either the unit is broken, or you have the engine revs too low and the "go pedal" too advanced.

With a HST, max wheel turning power occures with the minimum wheel speed.

Set the engine speed to recommended rpm, and then adjust tractor speed to the slowest creep. Do NOT advance the tractor speed. It will either pull or spin the wheels.

Or else, it's broken

To clarify, the engine is at WOT, the reverse pedal is slowly depressed until slack is removed from the tow strap. Once the load is engaged I gradually increase pressure on the reverse pedal until either the stump is pulled, the equipment disengages from the stump, or the tractor stops reversing with WOT and maximum reverse pedal pressure without the stump being dislodged. The unit is not broken. After several hours of stump pulling, I used the tractor to mow 7 acres of thick wet grass with no problem with significant hills.

I guess the only way I will know is if I move the tow hook to the rear.

I suspect you will find it can pull better in the forward direction and if you have a 3ph you can improve your chances by lifting and pulling. I have pulled a few small trees with mine but generally relegate these tasks to the larger tractors.

I'm a one tractor household. Thanks for the input. I suspect the same. 3PH arrived today.

Please be really careful pulling from the 3PH.
Very common cause of avoidable accidents.
Pull should be done using a fixed drawbar located below the rear axle.

Thanks Baby Grand for the warning. Using a heavyhitch with the tow hook in the lower receiver. Will be sure to keep it below the axle height.

I am concerned with putting that much of a work load on the front axle. It is called front wheel assist rather than 4 wheel drive for a reason. But it probably will be alright for a home owner to do it this way occasionally. I wouldn't do it this way professionally day in and day out, it will break something.

I have owned a couple 4445's. They are/have the same basic machine/trans without the 4wd feature, and I can tell you definitively that they pull much better going forwards than backwards. Turn around and do it the right way. They are not designed for doing much hard work in reverse, only backing for up and a few light chores. Yours is not broken, it is simply bypassing like it was designed to do since the gearing is designed far more for mowing and light apps like tilling, than serious ground work. These machines should really have the old two range system found on 420's and 430's.

Yes, This is the incorrect technique for a hydrostatic.

Increasing the pedal pressure is NOT the appropriate action.

Pick a speed (slow) and stick with it.

The tractor will pull LESS powerfully with increased pedal movement.

Think of that pedal as a Hydraulic lever. The more you move it, the farther away from the load is the fulcrum. OR, what do you do when you want to travel FAST? You depress the pedal more. " Fast" and "pulling power" are on opposite ends of the control. ;-)

Try it!

Pulling from the rear will transfer weight/force to the rear wheels increasing tractive effort. Hitch below the axle with as long a hitch bar as you have available for the safest combination,

Add weights out front if ytou need more stability.
