I was plowing today (snow) and needed to push down the rear diff lock...I released it on the dry road and was backing up turning a tight circle and I heard a clicking from the rear...is it just that it didn't release ??
Any trick to making sure its released ?? How do I know if I hurt anything

Make sure your diff lock pedal is NOT stuck down. And if you haven't checked it yet make sure your hydro fluid level is where it should be. Diff lock should only be used when going in a straight line. Use while turning can break internal gears.

Fluid level is perfect, pedal is NOT stuck down NOW...it MAY have been then...how do I know if I already wrecked something ...its not making noise now...IF I did wreck something would warranty cover It ??

I believe it does. My opinion is you used your diff lock and didn't give it time to release before you started turning while backing up. I hardly ever need to use mine but when I do I release the pedal while still going fwd then back up a few feet in a straight line before turning.

It may very well have an overrunning gear in it like your PTO does. There to protect the gear box from imploding in tight turns

Or it could have been trying to disengage itself and was clicking because of that.

If you damage it, believe me, you'll be the first to know. I wouldn't give it a 2nd thought. In fact, I'd be thinking 'U-Joint' about now.

I'm sure you didn't. If you had stripped a gear or broken off a tooth you would feel it skip during normal driving. A fried of mine with a JD tractor did bust a couple teeth off his right rear gear reduction box because his diff lock stuck down. He figured out it was broke because it wouldn't move in 2WD and only when he engaged 4WD would it go. Not sure if the XJ rear is set up the same as JD but I believe if something broke you would hear it. If you were on snow while turning with diff lock on the locked tire would have slid on the snow.

It seems ok and no clicking now

I’m sure you are fine. I don’t think the clicking was the rear locker. I think it was because you turned sharply on pavement while in 4WD.
I believe, based on operation of my 6168,there is a ratcheting clutch in the front drive shaft.

I was plowing the field, and when I got to he end of the row, I stomped on the left turning brake, and I heard this loud, rapid (like three per second) clicking noise. I stopped and realized it was in 4WD. I put it in 2WD and then no more clicking. The 4WD still works fine.

I once broke some gear teeth off on a Ford 8n, and there was no doubt about what happened .
The tractor was almost undrivable trying to get it back out of the field.
