I live in the Mid-Atlantic area, specifically Chesapeake Bay Southern Maryland. We have a small farm and raise Muscovy duck, geese, chickens and Berkshire Hogs. This is not our full-time job, but some days it feels like it.
We also heat our home with wood (Central Boiler e3200 hydronic wood gassification outdoor boiler), and we make use of the trees we lose in a given year. They are usually big and heavy - solid beech out to 35" in diameter. It seems our natural springs have shifted over the years, and a section of our woods that is home to massive beauties is now too wet to hold them up. The roots rot and/or the soil gets too soft. Either way, they come crashing down. The irony is the water is coming out the top of a hill, and the bottom is dry. Go figure.
I run a Deutz-Allis utility tractor that is about 34 years old. I am the second owner - my step-father was the first. The tractor is pretty strong for its age and gets a lot of work done. The engine always starts, and it can drag out even large trees. For an old machine, it kicks butt. Problem is it is getting long in the tooth and is pretty fugly. Kinda like me. I am considering a new machine, and hope you all can help. I will post in the appropriate place and time, seeking thoughts and ideas.
In return, I am happy to share any info I have on anything from computers to pigs to this state's fracked up gun laws.
Thanks.
