2000 JD 790 & 2008 XUV Gator 850D
got the pump adjusted on my gator and a bit of smoke now, nothing too much; along with an egt guage. run's about 800 degrees full throttle down the road. this seem normal, i feel it's plenty safe. anyway thanks to all on here who helped.

Viper,
I would be interested in the egt and it's readings. I have a turbo on my Kubota RTV1100 2009 that was purchased from the SFS group and would like to check it for the proper settings. Can you give me some tips on what egt readings to look for? I bought a boost gauge but it's not hooked up yet. Machine runs fine, just interested in knowing how you check a diesel engine. Know how a gas engine should look, plug wise and piston wise, for proper air/fuel mixtures, but the diesels are totally new to me. Love it though and that spurs my interests. Where do I get an egt gauge?

FYI my gator is NOT turbocharged yet, so your temperature reading WILL vary from mine; but mine will sit right about 800 degrees full throttle down the road with max rpm at stock location, thats with my fuel increased. You'll want to get an EGT guage package, it includes everything you'll need (guage, lead wires, hardware, and probe). I used a PPE one I had laying around from a pickup truck. Insert probe into manifold AFTER all your cylinders closest to the last port. I made a post with more info about selling what I did. You can see that and I've included some of the pics from that post also. Depending where your located, I'd be willing to help you out for installing the probe and guages. Just a guess, I'd expect your's to maybe be around 900--1000 degrees with the boost and increased fuel. You can always play with the fuel on a diesel to move your EGT around, but typically I like to have smoke so I know it's a safe range and not too lean; at the same time not too much smoke so you burn it up. I'm just learning with these engines and haven't been inside of one, but based on my job and past experience with diesels. I'd say around 1000 degrees WITH boost added to engine should be safe. Average pickup trucks (duramax, cummins, powerstroke) can EASILY hit 1500 degrees with a tuner, and more depending on their fuel delivery. 1700-1800 starts to melt stuff. I take this into configuration and keep in mind I'm playing with a 3 cylinder, and figure 1000 degrees should be safe. I wouldn't want to see this 3 cylinder touching 1500; although it might be perfectly safe, I try to judge it based on what it's temps are stock.

oops almost forgot, places that you can get an egt guage from are local auto part stores sometimes, otherwise outfits such as isspro, autometer, etc sell guages.

Actually aluminum melts at 1350. However the probe is reading the gas temp and not the metal temp so SHORT spikes to higher temps aren't harmful.

Viper, I can post some pics of my turbo if it would help. And the model number. Could be a good size for the gator and SFS said with the 3cyl diesel and this turbo it would only generate something less than 8 lbs of boost max. I'll double check that figure but I know it was low. I was asking why they didn't include a gauge and that was the reason given. No need. I had to adjust a mid-range screw and the high speed screw. The high speed had the tamper prof cap that was a ***** to remove. Realized afterward that I just need to keep tightening it and the rotation would have pushed the indents out and allowed removal. I squeezed the whole thing and turned it out as a unit, then removed the cap. Anyway there was no changing the timing with the use of shims and the high speed has 3 settings you can adjust to for different responses. No low speed changes, guessing turbo doesn't work much down low. Mid range screw was 2.5 turns out and no other adjustments. All fun stuff. Nice gain in power with the mid setting on the high speed adjuster. Looking forward to test with the egt and my high air-filter configuration to see if it is in spec. Thinking I'll try low setting to regain fuel economy and still have the mid rpm punch.

are the yanmar's pistons aluminum? We run dyno engines to 1500+ degrees with billet aluminum pistons just fine.

is your's a yanmar or different engine? what are these shims you are talking about, in the pump?! yes please post some pics; i'd love to see for comparison. Any other info is helpful too. I've got a brand new gt12 laying in the basement that i may try to use for flange production IF the flanges are the same on other turbochargers (yanmar manifolds a 4 bolt rectangle, gt 12 is a 3 bolt triangle). my yanmar pump has a fuel adjustment screw which i adjusted, and an "rpm stop" which limits the max rpm of the engine, it's a throttle stop basically in my mind; i have yet to adjust this setting. Everybodies different but in the diesel game i'd ALWAYS put a guage on to monitor when enhancements are made. Go out and buy a 0-10lbs pressure guage and throw that on the intake somewhere; that's what i'll be doing! if your close to me (northwest suburbs of chicago) i'd be more than happy to help you with guages or what not. vortekbullitt@msn.com
