Why doesnt John Deere make its own engines for its compact tractors(4000/4010 series)? They are Yamnar engines.Does John Deere own Yamnar? Why couldn't or why did John Deere not make there own engine for the 4000/4010 series?

It's a cost situation. Why spend the millions to set up manufacturing facilities when one can buy the engines and componenets? In the case of the smaller Deeres (like my 670), the entire machine is Japanese.
Most manufacturers of vehicles outsource quite a few of the components. The companies I've worked for were mostly automotive suppliers.

The yanmar engines aren't two bit machines, either. Look at their history and the awards they've received. Deere is lucky to have them purring under those green hoods. Liike what was said, most "manufacturers" are actually assembling subassemblies and marketing. They often call the shots on the design of those componants, but also, very often use "off the shelf" componants.

I have a Yanmar, now, and that is a large influence in the tractor I am going to buy. I know that I would be very satisfied with one under a green hood, too.

I agree they are great engines,I was just wondering why John Deere never created there own small engine./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gifAs far as I am concerned the Yamnar engines are 1 of the best things about the JD 4000/4010 series.

The Japanese have been in production of small diesel engines
longer than anyone in the world. While the west was growing bigger and bigger vehicles and and gas / diesel engines the Japanese were perfecting the smaller diesels.

Roy is right on tooling. Japanese manufacturers also have many common japanese brand component parts.

Japanese also split manufacture. For example, Iseki which produces compact Massey ferguson, has their Iseki engines in under 34 hpe(depends on model) and Isuzu 4 cyl diesels in their larger tractors.

Quality either way though.

John Deere builds their own large engines but I understand that is done in Mexico...Don't think you'll find a car, truck or tractor that is 100% American made. The only exception maybe some of the small garden tractors and then I won't bet any money on it...

I have a JD 790, it's 100% made in Japan by Yanmar...

I have a 2000 JD 4100 HST and if I am not mistaken, Yanmar made the whole thing, not just the engine

Gary, you are absolutely right. In fact, the current new JD products made in Japan are JD 790, 990, 4100N, 4100, 4010, 4110, and probably a few others; all use Yanmar engines and the country of origin is Japan which means that is where it was made. The manufacture tag (required by U.S. Customs for entry) must show the country of origin and if one searches very hard way back up in a most unlikely spot, usually in the rear inside fender well area but on occasion in the front under frame area, you'll find a plate listing Yanmar Engine Company Tokyo Japan. And that is in addition to the engine identifier on the engine. It means the entire tractor.

JD like GM ford and Dailmer Chrysler does own a part of any Nipponese (Japanese over here) firm that they purchase major components from or sub-contracts to. Allows them to make money even during slumps in the U.S.

Has anyone noticed that GM's new heavy duty truck diesel is made by ISUZU. The Japs' economy is hurting badly, they can build engines there that are as reliable as anything on earth and for a better price than we can do it here in America. The major manufacturing countries are usually somewhat competitively priced but with the economy the way it is, manufacturers will build stuff at cost to stay afloat. The problem in the very near future is the trend to build in China and other low paying countries. This will be another wave of cost cuts to buyers but will kill many more jobs. 3rd world quality is still far enough behind to scare off smart people. but it is improving with American and other countries setting up facilities in these 3rd world countries. I bought my JD 4310 knowing the motor was made in Japan. Show me a truly all American made tractor and I'll give it good thought next time. If you took all the foreign parts off a Harley, you couldn't push it out of the garage. The JD was assembled in America, the company is American, some American's have jobs due to my purchase, so I don't feel bad about my purchase. P.S. Many English farmers steer clear of their homeland's equipment to buy JD. I know this to be true. Does everyone know what tractor companies are from there?
I do.

GM does own isuzu, naturally they'd use their own engines. I don't even look at where it's made anymore. Companies today are so interdependant, every major product has outsourcing from several countries.

Same here ScottAr, I just buy to suit my needs and that is it. at this point, as I figure my purchase is putting some food on the table for the family of the American Dealer I bought it from.

Yep, you are correct Kyle_in_Tex, all of these companies are outsourcing parts from where ever they can get them for the best prices with enough quality to get by.
