Yanmar 1300D
I am new to the forum and am greatly impressed by the knowledge and support available here. I purchased a Yanmar 1300D with a Koyker 80 FEL and Yanmar tiller about a month ago. It has been a great machine and I have put about 10 hours on it (has 869 total). I used it over the weekend and all was fine. Went to start it today and it will not start. I haven't changed a thing. It does belch a fair amount of dark smoke, as it always did prior to starting, but now will not start. It seemed to be getting a bit harder to start that last couple of times i have used it. Air cleaner is clear. I am thinking that the thermostart may need to be replaced. Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

WHAT have you checked?? Plenty of fuel in the tank? Fuel getting TO the inj. pump inlet??
Have you bleed the injectors?? Do you have fuel UP TO the injectors??
Does it have a compression release?? Do you know how to use it??

Hi and thanks. there is plenty of fuel. I do have a compression release and use it as described in the manual to start the tractor. Oil level is good. Aside from that i haven't checked anything. I will. bleed the fuel system today. the previous owner removed the factory fuel filter and replaced it with a cheap disposable one. I have a new filter assembly from Hoye that I will put on today. I noticed that the hard starts began after i added fuel, so I am going to drain the fuel and replace it with new fuel. When trying to start there is a lot of black smoke.

^Interested to know what you find. I have a YM2000BD giving me some issues as well, but I do know the fuel is a little old. I’m curious if that may very well be the problem.

I should know something by the end of the weekend. I removed and cleaned the fuel tank and while it was out i noticed that my electrical was a mess. Flasher and current limiter were hanging and only 1 fuse was intact so my oil pressure and overheat lights were inop as well as all lights and flashers. I rewired and replaced the fuse block with a spade fuse block all are working again. I am in the process of reinstalling the tank and filter. I should be able to attempt to start it with fresh fuel this weekend. will let you know the outcome.

Good job! In another thread I mentioned I had Elec. problems. Chrg. light would come on. Drove me nuts. 14 on the meter and the light would start flash? Both Regulators Old and New model. In really good shape. All org. wire and block without a doubt even org. fuses. only 1 broke and that was flasher. If I replace the lights they would work. And the Charge light ended up being a bad connection on the fuse block. So now everything still works and I know it's org. Plugged up the old Reg. and yep! it works fine........... Well worth the time putting these things back in working order.........

VICTORY!!! after changing the fuel, oil, replacing the fuel filter and doing all of the rewiring, my little tractor still would not start,. Did the same thing as before, black smoke and not starting. I had resigned myself to pulling the injectors when i stumbled across a forum where the gentleman had the same issue on another brand tractor. His answer was to mix 1 part gas to 1 part diesel in a spray bottle and spray it in the intake. I figured I would give it a try. It worked, my little Yanmar cam to life immediately and I have started it a dozen times since. It fires on the first or second crank. I'm not sure what this does, but it solved my issue at least for now and also gave me the opportunity to fix many small issues that had been neglected. Next it time to paint it.

From my past experience, white smoke when starting is fuel, and black smoke is oil. If oil is getting past the piston rings, it could be pressure is passing the other way leading to low compression, hence bad starting. It might be worth taking the oil filling cap off whilst the engine is running to see how much `gas` is blowing back. Most engines give off a bit but if she`s like a steam train engine, she might be telling you she`s showing her age.
