My cousin "inherited" a 1500 that we were finally able to start by pulling. It belched a lot of black smoke and had zip for power. My JD 790 manual says the fuel pump might be out of timing. How does one check the fuel pump timing on it? I hate to strart taking things off looking for timing marks. Any other ideas?
Thanks.

First thing to do is to remove the fuel tank, clean it, replace it and add new fuel. If that doesnt work then start looking at pumps and injectors.

I'm not much of a tractor expert, but these symptoms sound like some of the diesels that start running backwards. Search for "running backwards" on this forum, or see

Thanks, Gary. We didn't take the tank off yet, but today I tried it myself and found fuel going to the pump, but none coming out. I suppose it could be a restricted flow to the pump and I didn't recognize it, but I don't think so. I took the pump bolts out and the cover plate, but stopped when I saw the clip holding the throttle linkage. I was afraid it might fall into the block. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif How di I get the pump out safely? I appreciate any other knowledge or thoughts you have.

JonT,

Did the air cleaner check out ok?

Air and exhaust restrictions can cause symptoms you've described. (hard starting, low power, black smoke)

These are the instructions for removing the fuel injector pump on my Deere 4100. (Yanmar built)

First the clip and washer, if removable. (washer may or may not be fixed to linkage) Disconnect governor linkage, remove mounting nuts and washers, then pull injector pump straight up, lining up pin with notch in housing. Dont pry or otherwise damage timing shims or housing. Same number of shims (thickness) removed to be replaced using protective seal coating.

Replacement reverse of removal (but of course) /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Reconnect governor linkage using hole closest to front of tractor.

Use engine asy lube to help hold washer in place.

Bleed fuel system. Using same thickness of shims timing normally should not change.

Maybe it can help. Maybe not.
Anyhow that's how its done on mine.

Good luck

DFB

Sound like a Kubota someone brought in recently. Really hard to start, wound over and over before firing. Found that it ran on 1 cylinder instead of 2, which also account for no power(could'nt even get up a slight hill).

Diagnosed as siezed delivery valve in fuel pump. Sent pump to pumproom which fixed problem. Tractor running normally with normal power. Siezed pump element most often found on tractors that have been sitting around for a while.
Other problems can also cause similar complaint, such as wear in bore, sized or stuck piston rings, waterdamaged valves in cylinder head etc

These failures are best repaired by an experienced diesel mechanic.
