I have a friend that has a 1700 yanmar and has been tilling with a 48 inch roto-tiller for 5 years with no problem--the tines wore out and rather than purchase all new tines--He bought a new 48 inch tiller---Here is the problem--He says he can only go ablut 100-150 feet and the tractor begins to overheat--he has tried flushing the radiator--checked thermostat--and the new tiller runs free and is lubricated at all points--I suggested that his old tiller with wore tines did not put any load on his tractor and the new tiller with new and agressive tines may be pulling harder--any other ideas???

Things to consider:

Make sure all coolant levels are correct including the engine oil and transmission fluid. Some diesel engines have an engine oil cooler. Make the sure the cooler isn't plugged if the tractor has one.

Is he sure the temperature gauge sending unit is working correctly. Is the tractor actually overheating? Is he losing water?

Is the fan run by belt? Is the belt in good shape and tensioned correctly?

Maybe he needs to pull the radiator and have it reworked at a shop. Sometimes flushing or backflushing just won't do the job.

Otherwise:

Till slower in a lower gear.

Add a pint of coolant additive that racers use to lower temps.

I had a YM240 that overheated; the problem ended up being the radiator fins were plugged with debris. I pulled it out and had a radiator shop clean and pressure check it. No problems after that.

machinedoc,
I have a couple of questions. Is the old tiller a Yanmar? And is the new domestic? That may be a start. The Yanmars have a sort of knife blade, or sickle blade looking tine where as the domestics have a definate bend in the tine. Could be putting more pull on the engine, or maybe he is used to tilling in a higher PTO speed which you can do with a Yanmar tiller but not some others.

What thermostat did he check? ( A yanmar 1700 right? ) Has he added a water pump?

I agree with these guys. Unless he has added a waterpump and thermostat he has none and has to be sure the radiator is clean and filled with 70/30 water/antifreeze. They say with the bottom hose off you should not be able to overflow the radiator with full water pressure going in the top. There may be stuff in there that needs to be rodded out.

Just haviing the right mix may solve the overheating. Then getting the radiator really clean inside and out. The thermosiphon is some different than what we are used to.

Since the only variable that changed is the tiller than I would agree with inspector507. Us tillers have a root cutting tine and puts more load on the tractor. He needs to slow down and run the tiller in the 540 RPM gear.
