yanmar 1802
I am considering building a log splitter but read that some tractors hydraulic system isnt strong enough. Do the smaller yanmars have this problem

My understanding is that the volume of the tractor's output is the limiting factor, not the "strength." Your 1802 uses the same pump as a Yanmar 1510 does, referenced by Hoye to produce about 4.8 gallons per minute. Most log splitter pumps have a reduced pressure stage that moves 3 to 4 times that volume, obviously decreasing the cycle time by the corresponding amount. The pressure is sufficient, the tractor pump just doesn't move enough volume to be cycle the cylinder on a splitter rapidly.

Yes, they do have that problem. I am thinking your 1802 has the same pump my 2002 has. My pump is rated at 10cc/revolution equaling 6.34gpm. I think you will find most splitters needing more than that to have a decent cycle time. I just read 284s post and you may have the 1510 pump. My 2002d had power steering and I know my flow rate is what I am stating as I have the pump tag in hand showing those specs. Only way you can know for sure is to look at the tag on your pump. Good chance it is a Kanzaki pump. I would be interested in your findings. :D

Definitely do as Winston suggests and check your pump's data plate. I should have suggested that, and just went by what Hoye sells as the replacement pump for your machine. Verifying what you actually have is a much better plan.

I have a 10 tonne logsplitter on a Yanmar F215 using the tractor hydraulics.
The cylinder bore is 60mm diameter.
However the 10 tonnes is produced at 4786psi so at tractor hydraulics it is producing less than half the specced tonnage.
I find the speed to be fine , in fact any faster and I would not feel safe using it and it splits everything I need except where branches join the main stem.

I am i canada right now so I'll check the plate when I get back. Here is another question, how hard it it to make the top link hydraulic? I do not have the fel so shouldnt those valves be open for me to use?

Well the dealer told me the tractor could later have an fel put on it. So I assumed the hydraulic hooks must already be in place

I think there is a place on your 1802 to tap in but the loader valve would come with a loader and a top link valve would have to be installed in order to operate a hydraulic top link.

Alright, ifigured the hook up was on all tractors and just capped off with the ones that didnt have an fel. Im still re new to all this. Could you point me in the right direction to get started?

Never had one of these but this is one option you might consider. Price wise it will end up being more economical than the hydraulic top link. You would need to make sure the length on it would work for you. Surplus Center - HYDRAULINK CATEGORY 1 TOPLINK Here is a video showing it in action. Demonstration video

I am really not the one to give a lot of installation advise. I am not a hydraulic guru by any means. I will point out a few things that might point you in the right direction. First item you will need is the top link such as this. Surplus Center - 2X8.25X1.18 CAT I HYD DA TOP LINK CYL You will need to make sure the retracted and extended length will work for you. Notice this one has a check valve which research shows to be a plus.

Then you will have to install a control valve to operate with such as this. Surplus Center - 1 SPOOL 8 GPM PRINCE MB11B5C1 DA VALVE

Then you will need hydraulic hoses to fit your installation such as this. One I am showing is for pricing estimate only. Surplus Center - 3/8" X 36" JIC 6F X JIC 6F 4000 PSI HYD HOSE

Then you will need hydraulic fittings such as this. Estimate purposes only. Surplus Center

This picture shows one place you can hook up on your 1802. Notice the looped hydraulic hose going around the stop valve. Where the ends of that hose go into the control valve is where you can hook up hydraulics. There are instructions on how to do it. If you decide to proceed I will share them.

Might note this is going to be an expensive endeavor. Maybe close to $350? :(
