Yanmar 1810d \"glow plugs\"

I've been reading this forum for over a year, along with all the information I could find about greys. I finally decided to buy a Yanmar 1810d with a loader and a snow blower.
Just got it yesterday. looks good and runs great. I've got a couple of questions. The manual that came with it talks about not holding the starter key more than 10 seconds in the TS position, how long would I have to wait to retry the start if I need to ? My other question is what the heck does the decompression lever really do ??
I'm using 50/50 kero-diesel in it, and going to keep it covered this winter.
I plan to keep my driveway clear all winter with this, is there anything else I should do to keep this ready for winter ?

You should wait 1 minute between restart attempts. The decompression lever holds the valves open to allow the engine to get up some speed and build oil pressure before starting.

I usually kept a trickle charger hooked to mine in the winter. It couldn't hurt. The charging system on these is the weakest link as far as I am concerned.

Re: Yanmar 1810d \"glow plugs\"

Thanks for the info. I had a devil of a time on the first start with this new rig...The starter would not engage , all I got was a click on the solenoid... fiddled around a bit and it fired up. Loose connection I guess..
Got another question. I've got a 30 day warantee, so I'm trying to work this rig as much as I can for the time period.
Question is, When I push in the clutch , I get a lot of noise. the only time I hear it is when I depress the clutch or happen to have my foot on it.. do I need to replace the throwout bearing.. how hard is it...I want to make sure that this is not going to give me problems in the middle of the winter. so I'd rather do it at 20 above than 20 below

That does sound like the T/O bearing. If you do the repair yourself (split the tractor) you might check with the dealer you bought it from and feel them out as this may leave them off the hook for the remainder of any warrantee repairs. Or you might want to take it back to them while you still have some recourse. (IMHO)

The last one I did on that size tractor took about 4 hrs with a second hand to help. I had a small track hoe to lift and move with that made it much easier. I made a set of " legs" that bolt to the holes for the loader on the side of the engine. That made it safer.

I would put agree that its a throwout bearing.
while you are at it replace the clutch disc too.
I would take it back & ask them to do it.

Re: Yanmar 1810d \"glow plugs\"

hi there,
I would second/third the suggestion to take the tractor back to the dealer while you have warranty to have these items repaired.... Secondly, about your cold climate, i used to live in northfield, so I know how cold you maybe can get! I would recommend some sort of covering for your tractor and then some way to heat the inside of the covering. I have a 1601d which I store in a small barn. I cover the engine compartment with a tarp and heat under the tarp (for about an hour, up to 80F) with an electric heater ( i'm in central MA now, btw). I too hope to use my tractor for sno removal - whatever you can do to make starts easier will help, e.g. lite-er weight oil, engine block heater, thermostart, direct heat, etc.
Good luck, (wish it to me too!!!)

I heat my 2210 the same way. I use an oil filled radiator... safe heat.... (honeywell) at Walmart $35.00. Plastic tarp $5.00. I also use the ts and decomp lever. The barn cats like it too....
