I am supposed to go look at an IHC 254 this coming Monday but in this weeks bargain paper I see this ad for a 2cyl Yanmar diesel. So I called the fella. I was talking to him on my cell phone while I was at a farmers market so, I couldn't hear everything well. I did not catch a model number. Supposed to be "like new" and has a mower deck and snow blower included. Also ha a snow cab with it and 3 pt hitch. The hitch has never been used.

Any info anyone has on the two cylinder Yanmars? I know Deere put Yanmars in some of their machines and they have good reports but, were they the two cylinder ones? Thanks all.

Can't speak for Yanmar 2 cyl diesels but I have three Kubota B5100 tractors with a 508cc 2 cyl engine.

Probably not as quiet or smooth as the 3 cyl in my B6100 but bulletproof and start easily (given 20 seconds of glow plugs).

My neighbor has a Yanmar YM2000 with a 2 cyl 20 horse Yanmar engine in it. If there ever was an engine that was abused it's this one. In the 14 years that he's owned it I doubt the oil has ever been changed. I sits outdoors all winter and in the summer he uses a 6 foot finish mower to cut about 10 acres weekly. It's has a serious leak in the oil pan which he wont fix, he just adds more oil now and again. He never greases it and so the most of the front end parts are sloppy.
With 1,200 hrs on it the engine runs fine, starts right up in the winter and pulls the mower in the summer. If ever had the need to buy a small tractor I'd consider nothing else but a Yanmar. They also sip fuel.
BTW- The builders of many high end boats ($500,000 and up) offer Yanmar Marine diesels as an option. Waterman here on the Chesapeake swear by them, and they are not known for taking the best care of engines either.

JD uses a 2cyl Yanmar engine in the 650 and the 670 subcompacts Don't know about any other models though. They are very good engines, you shouldn't have any concerns with buying a tractor just on that one point.

I have a YM 2000D, it is not as smooth as my 3 cylinder Mitsubishi was but it runs like a top, starts every time and is very good on fuel. There is no question I am hard on equipment and this little tractor has been great in the 3 yrs I've had. They are rather narrow so I flipped the wheels to widen the base a little and that made it much steadier. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. Good luck!
