My first post - be gentle :)

I've got a YM1700 I really like, plan to keep it forever. Locally is a YM2000 for sale with a "bad engine" (nope, don't know more than that). I was thinking of getting it for parts cause ascetically it's in better shape than my running fine YM1700. Thing is I know they are "similar", but not sure that translates down to parts being interchangeable enough to make it worth spending any money on it.

Are the hydraulics and majority of the components similar enough to make the 2000 work as a part tractor? Can I take those slightly bigger rear wheels and slap them on the 1700 one day if I need to (moving the rim and all)? I also understand I can move the water pump from the 2000 to the 1700, which sounds like a good idea

All input appreciated!

Matt

Welcome to TBN!
The majority of the parts will be a direct fit. The only real differences between the two are the pistons, liners, rings, and head gasket (all because the 1700 has a smaller bore). The crank, transmission, axles, even the bare block will all interchange. If it is 2wd you can swap the rear tires. Yes, I would make the water pump swap one of my first projects.

Wow, straight from the source! Thank you so much for your reply :)

I just made arrangements to meet the guy this afternoon! (Verified it is 2wD). Heck, depending on how "bad" the engine is maybe I'll be better off fixing it up and having 2 Yanmars.

Can't ever have too many tractors, right? :D

I was thinking the same thing. Depending on what it requires you may just keep it and fix it as you have time and money. even new piston rings and liners if necessary as well as berings should not be that bad. NOw if crank and all is galled maybe its just a parts unit. But you could always put your engine in that tractor and have a better looking one if you want all that effort.

I missed out on my chance to buy a dirt cheap not working yanmar about 4 years ago and still kick myself. It was posted cheap and I waited a day to long

... Then there's the 'too cheap' Yanmar that turned out to be not worth the few hundred $ asked.

I still feel terrible about the following: A long time ago someone advertised on Ebay a YM2000 that fell off a trailer and rolled. I suggested look at that ad, to someone like Rellik who needed some hard parts and didn't care about sheet metal. The poor guy bought it and it was a total loss, badly misrepresented, probably on the way to the scrap metal yard when the guy crashed his trailer. Buyer said the seller had lied all through the transaction and there were no usable parts at all. :grumpy: Sorry guy. I've quit making referrals like that, after that bad outcome.

Caveat Emptor.

Well, I went and looked at it, and brought it home cheap!

Guy said it ran last season with lots of blow by but couldn't start it this season. Was older retired guy, didn't want to mess with it as a project once he realized he might have been ripped off when he bought it a couple years before. He noticed after the fact some JB weld on the block and thats why he listed it as bad engine. I figured in the long term well worth it for the water pump, hydraulics and all the sheet metal and tires are in better shape than mine. Already moved some of the original hydraulic control parts over to my 1700 from it that had been bypassed (had been giving me trouble since I got it - now I know why).

So anyway, I'm happy!

If I was the buyer of that one I would of opened a case with ebay. And I hope he paid with Paypal. You WILL get your money back from ebay/paypal if you were screwed. All you have to do is present your case and pics if needed they will always weigh on the side of the buyer. And with the ability to go into the sellers account and back the money out they don't even need any acknowledgement from the seller. And he still has to pay the fees!!

I have got refunds on several things that I never received. Even one where the member was banned or left ebay after my purchase and was from china!! I got my money back on that one in like a week or so.
