Yanmar 2210d. Tractor has FEL I installed third function valve for thumb grapple, works fine until u put pressure on it then it shears keyway on hydraulic pump. What would cause this?

How many lines does the loader valve have? 6 or 7? Also, the third function valve is a solenoid valve or a manual valve?

It has 6 & 3rd function is electric solenoid. Everything works as it should until u try to work the thumb as in grabbing a log or brush then it shears key way on pump then no hydraulics at all. Thank you for any ideas u may have!! These pumps are fairly small im wondering if it’s too much for it?

If the valve has 6 hoses, then the problem is there. What is happening is that you're feeding the third function valve using the Tank port of the loader valve. The solenoid valves don't usually have a built in relief valve but the loader valve does have one and it needs the Tank port connected straight to the tank so it can relieve the pressure.

By feeding the 3rd function valve using the Tank port of the Loader valve, you're basically deadheading the system every time you use the 3rd function. You're very lucky that you're just shearing keys because deadheading a pump usually results on cracked pumps, lines, valves, etc.

To properly feed the 3rd function, you need to use the Power Beyond (PB) port of the loader valve with the proper PB sleeve, while the Tank port will go back to the tank. You may need to check if the valve has PB ability though. It should be marked on the casting of the loader valve. It should have marked like: P, T and PB or C or N. P is pressure, T is tank and PB/C/N is power beyond.

It is a low flow pump, but it will operate a grapple. I plumbed a thumb grapple on a 3110 I onced owned, and while not very quick. It worked pretty well.

But like has been mentioned. I believe you're deadheading the pump. you need to check how the return from the 3 function is plumbed

I don't know if your 2210 is the same as my 2310 but if it is there is a power beyond port under the seat. It is in the cylinder head of the 3 point hitch cylinder. To use it there is a little fussing around that needs to be done but it is in the manual. In the manual it is stated that if the proper and easy procedure is not followed the hydraulic pump will deadhead and this can either break the key or break the pump. It does indeed sound as if your pump is being deadheaded. If your loader valve does not have the proper port for power beyond there may be hope if your 2210 is like the 2310.

No. The size is not the problem. Small pumps don't pump as much volume, but they are the same pressure as larger ones....and it is pressure being built up (called "deadheaded") that is causing the pump shaft to shear the key.

Actually that sheared key is telling you that the pump is a good one. It just can't push the fluid out of the way because you have the plumbing wrong. It sounds like you have blocked off the return line back to the tank.

Lots of solutions here, the first one that sounds right to me is #4 by ptsg. Bottom line is you have to have some sort of additional power beyond port to work the grapple. Or else you can use a diverter valve to that you can only work the grapple or the loader but not both at the same time. And in no case do you get to interrupt the flow back to the tank. That needs to stay open at all times.

That makes sense now that u say that! I will check tomorrow. Will update asap! Thank you very much!! Im no expert at hydraulics thats why I reached out on here. Again thank you!!!

One more question i did have some trouble with one of the quick couplers that goes to the grapple when I went to hook it up it seemed like it didn’t want to couple together but I finally got it to connect, is that Something that may be an issue?? Im pretty sure i plumed everything by directions i got but will definitely recheck? Thanks in advance!

. You most likely have pressure on the grapple lines and pressure against the valve fittings you're trying to connect to.
When you try to connect the lines, you're pushing against that pressure.
I have that issue trying to connect my grapple as well
