Yanmar 2220D with locked front wheel

Front right wheel is locked and won't roll. I suspect that the gears have locked up and are possibly shredded in there. The best thing is the stub axle has a notch in it that has to be turned to align with the bolts in order to remove the cover (#5 in this diagram), but I can't rotate the axle to align the notch. I'm thinking that I may need to remove the whole housing, or work at it from the top down, but I don't want to tear into it without asking what the best method might be to get in and tear this apart without causing more damage. Anyone out there who can help and let me know what the best way might be to dig into this problem?

not positive, nor do i have a 4wd yannie, but i would think that you could take the drive shaft loose in the tunnel and then you would be able to turn your wheel if that is the problem and its not bearing related meaning a bearing welded to a spindle.

Upon further thinking if there is busted gear in there limiting movement the shaft wont solve anything?

I was thinking the same thing...remove the shaft and eliminate that portion of the equation. Assuming the front end is jacked up - are both wheels locked up? I think if you cannot get to #5 with an offset wrench etc, you will be forced to remove the bolts that hold on "A" and see if that allows you to see what damage or what is causing the problem. BTW, there are two drain plugs on either end to drain the gear lube out. It takes awhile because its pretty thick.

I believe if you remove #25 & #26 bolts, drop the lower knuckle and go from there. You will need to remove #1 from the lower knuckle.

Looks like I'm removing the knuckle this weekend. Might be better anyway since the tractor is sitting right where it broke down and this way I can take off the whole piece and throw it on the bench. Thanks everyone for the information and insight, I'll post again when I get my ride fixed.

This assembly is similar to my 2210D, if not identical. Winston called it. Remove bolts 25 & 26 and the lower half of the knuckle will fall away.

It is heavy. I sat the axle on a jack stand and used a floor jack to drop the knuckle on and to lower it.
