Do you mean filling the housing with diesel, sloshing it around and draining it,
go for it gets done a lot.
If you mean filling it and running it through your valves and cylinders with your hydraulic pump,
I'd be pretty leary of doing that.

I don't know how much fluid is in you particular tractor, but I think the slosh some diesel around following a couple full fluid changes (with a few hours operating in between) would get it pretty cleaned up, including the pump and cylinders. If it's a large tractor, 2 changes might get pricey.

Nearly missed your Yanmar post! You would have gotten about 20 replies in the Yanmar section here with tricks to clean the water out.

Your YM2500 is just a gear shifter version of my YM2610 with Power-Shift.

Yes, diesel low sulfur works GREAT with our machines. Why? Because our models have the reusable and user cleanable hydraulic filters. Actually your filter and mine are the same. And our machines have the same engine.

Also, your machine painted green is identical with a JD850. With that said, the JD TM1192 Service Manual would answer this question in a heart beat.

Before draining or opening up the hydraulic system, your will need a pre-cleaner. The top cleaner is made by SeaFoam called TransTune.

Sea Foam Official Video: How to add Trans Tune to hydraulic fluid...

Our hydraulic fluid for Yanmar and John Deere Compact tractors is J20C. The 2 companies spent a great deal of testing and engineering for this Hy-Guard formula. It's a petroleum-based hydraulic fluid with a foundation of synthetic 10W30. Thus, the SeaFoam TransTune is perfect to use.

If it's a gear drive a bit of milky fluid wont hurt any thing but I also wouldnt leave it in there. The cheap walmart fluid is good to flush stuff out. Alot better than diesel.

I have an old ford 851(gear drive) it gets so much water in the trans that over one winter I couldn't move it, fluid froze.

I just did this to my Mits. I came here looking for the "cocktail" to pickle the water out of my trans/PTO, because my lift didn't want to work. I eventually found it here and at a HEavy Equipment forum.... If not mistaken it was ATF, a little diesel and denatured alcohol in the proper volume for your machine.

I ultimately had decided to just drain and refill with my usual AW 33 hydraulic oil- it was signifcantly less expensive. Drained the contaminated out, refilled with 33, ran it for a half hour to get it warmed up and cycled my lift (which did go right to work) drove it around the yard- then drained that. It was contaminated again. The second fill and run cycle took care of it. A tip I can offer: Let it drain for a few hours, and if possible use a floor jack and jack up the tractor a little to change the "height" of the drains. I had two drains, and a Screen/Mesh type filter to clean, which trapped a good pint behind the filter.
