Yanmar YM 2000
I've been perusing this website for a couple weeks now again and reading posts on every subject from gauge install to VN tractors as I have been performing service on my YM 2000 for the spring season. I bought my YM 2000 about 10 years ago (when I first found and joined the site then lost my password!!) and it has been nothing but great, awesome in fact. After reading a lengthy thread on VN "factory rebuilds" I got to thinking about mine. I bought it used from a dealer as an import, received great follow up service and like I said have had no major issues, in fact just replaced alternator as it failed last season. ANyway to the point, when I bought it the hour meter said 907 hours if I recall, and I was looking at some websites to see what the old girl is bringing in these days and saw more tractors advertised with "800 hours" or "900 Hours" and thought " Did mine have 907 hours or 1907 or 2907 hours. What do you all think? I mean the ym2000 dates from the 70's and was used agriculturally I believe, and 900 hours seems really low to me. Not that it matters, as I've had no issues but just a thought....

I just went over 3000 hours on my vn ym2002d. It had around 2500 when I bought it with a multitude of problems. Good steady reliable machine now. It has a 5 digit hour meter. I too, have wondered about the low hour machines.

I think the ones that served a second lifetime in the paddies of VN before arriving here can be expected to have some hours on them.

But Yanmars imported used from Japan probably are low hour dealer tradeins, due to their tax laws that heavily subsidize buying a new tractor.

I can't figure out if my US YM240 was really 1043 hours when I bought it. I was told it was parked outdoors for years after the first owner closed his riding stable business. Could be, the appearance confirms the outdoors part. Hours? Who knows. At any rate it hasn't needed anything since I bought it in 2003 and spent a month restoring minor stuff - bashed headlights etc. Nothing on it indicates high hours.

The YM186D was a different story. The 900+ hours showing clearly wasn't the first 900. The steering box was worn out, then I found remnants of a prior overhaul inside the steering box when I took it apart. The thing runs like new but I wouldn't be surprised if total hours are in the thousands.

The 1610D my buddy bought last year was from Josef and they told him they come from a rebuild shop in Japan.

I thought that was interesting considering the VN stories we've heard also his hour meter says less than 50. So who knows how many life's its had previously and where they played out? But it is a sweet little machine it impresses me who ever did it.

I finally had to replace the alternator on mine this past weekend after years of trouble free use. I use it mainly now for bush hogging the field and other odds and ends. I had more implements years ago but sold off quite a few when we were planning on moving and needed the cash. I guess regardless it has been so good and I tend to baby it that it should keep on working for some time to come.

Welcome to the Yanmar forum btw! Sorry you had to dump some attachments they only go up in price later.

I fix Japanese cars for a living and I am especially fond of Toyota and Honda and imho Yanmar tractors are so close to Toyota in their logic and engineering its uncanny and thats a good thing.

So after some research I ended replacing the alternator with one for a 72 Datsun and Whamo, worked great. I was going over the old girl last night and remembered that I did replace the sterring box years and years ago as the original just had too much play in it. Got it online again from advice from this forum. I agree the engineering that is in theses tractors (as well as the cars) is incredible for longetivity. I also have a 78 Toyota P/U that just won't quit either!!

I got my Yanmar 2000 as a VN rebuild, although i think they said Korea?? I knew where it was from and took the gamble. It had some things that they worked out under warrenty, like a cracked radiator, bad volt reg, and a bad valve on the 3pt that wouldnt hold pressure. But since those fisrt months has been trouble free. Just tighting loose bolts and maintence.

Anyway to the point of this thread. Mine showed 19 hours as did most on the lot, i think its a combo of them tuning the meters back to around 15-20 in the "rebuild" shop in "korea" for whatever reason?

As for the 900 you had 10 years ago, i beleive it to be true.

If your tractor was a 79 year model and it worked for 22 years before it was traded and then made its way to the US and you got it around 10 years ago thats somewhere around 40 hours a year. And from what you read some of these farms are only a few acres like say 5 and they use it to till once a year. Looking at how fast some can move in the paddies i can see that an easy number as most only ever have a tiller on them. Also remember the hour meter is variable, will only show 1 hour for ever 1 hour run at 2400rpm. If they were tilling at say 1500rpm to save fuel or what ever the tractor would only register 1 hour for ever 1.4 hours or so of actual clock time. Which means that its possible for you to have an actual 1600 or so "clock" hours on the machine at that point. The thing will idle for like 2.5 hours before it reads an hour.

Just doing some quick math on what I have now hour wise I put a ridiculoulsy low amount of hours on mine, I only take care of 6 acres with it and bush hog 5 of that, besides insalling my fence years ago and dragging logs with it now I guess I don;t really put a lot of time on it. It does seem reasonable with the point that if they use them mainly to till once a year than it is not a lot of hours!!

Most of the VN recons have the hour meter replaced. If yours is showing over 900 hours, and the tractor doesn't show a lot of wear and tear then it may be correct. Fredricks Equipment refurbishes there own tractors from top to bottom and gives a one year warranty on all there tractors. I know them personally, they can answer any question you may have.
