Wilson Tractor in Kernasville, NC (Greensboro area).

Anyone familiar with this dealer? He selld yanmar's from his house, has a decent inventory, says there is a 90 day warranty (parts), but not through him, through the people in Atlanta he sells for. I am looking for a yanmar and his prices are fair, but they have extremely low hours, I am aware of the vietnam recons, are all yanmars with 0 hours bad?

I know nothing about him, but I am glad someone closer to me starting to sell yanmars. I hear a lot of horror stories about the viet recons, but Im sure mine was one, and I have had only minor things happen in the 2 years Ive owned it. Its never let me down, and I would not hesitate to buy another one. So, No, not all recons are bad, but Im sure some are.
If you are mechanically inclined, Im sure you can handle any trouble you have from the experts here.Just be sure and buy a model that has good parts support. Good Luck.

Do the parts have to come from Atlanta? If he has them in stock it'd be better, but I'm still not sure I'd buy a 0 hour tractor myself.

All you have to do is search this forum. At the very least get references from whoever you shop. I still get at least 2-3 calls weekly from people who bought a unit then get no or little support and have lots of problems...in virtually EVERY case they did not get references..."well he seemed so nice", or "he seemed to know what he was talking about", yada yada. How much of a dealer is someone who tells you the alleged "warranty" on what they're selling is offered by someone else...someone you will never see or meet or be able to get references on? Our customers deal with us....start to finish, and we virtually insist on giving them references.

"I've only heard good things about him" is the kind of stuff that leads people to buy when they perhaps should not. What good things? From whom? Previous customers or casual commentors? Not meaning to pick on that poster, but surely you see the point.....that is a very generalized comment that really tells you nothing of substance. Get references. I can't emphasize that enough. Multiple references, some at least a year old or so. We delivered another tractor to NC just last week.

Cane Creek is where I bought mine, and Arch IS a good guy. They treated me very well, were honest, and I would/will buy from him again. They know how to treat you right. Bottom line is, buy the tractor you want, where you want, and if somthing is wrong, you can fix it. No tractor will run forever without a problem.

If the original supplier is still in business (at Alanta) that I bought my tractor from, then you are looking at this senerio. Recons are shipped to Atlanta for final assembly ie put the wheels on and check for leaks and such. Out the door they go to your local guy that is selling them off his front porch. Most likely he does not have mechanic on duty and may not even have a service bay. The warranty given is 90 days on parts, if something fails who is replacing the part? You. So if you are not good with a wrench then this may not be for you. Ideally you should not have to worry about this if the tractor was reconditioned properly or the dealer checked everything out in detail on a non-recon unit. However, things do wear and break on tractors, especially older ones. So you need to think about what you want out of your dealer before you buy and factor this into the final price. My recon has been going pretty well, 260 hours on it with only replacing the oil and temp sending units plus a few filters, but I have tighten many a bolt on it. Unfortunately some people have ended up with terrible units with mixed model parts and no support. Unless you get something in writing from this dealer, as soon at the tractor is paid for any problems that arise are going to be solely yours to deal with.

On my VC recon They had put a light grease in the front axle--"that way it does not leak." I tool the risk since they had a 6 month warranty and it was the exact model that I was looking for. About 15 hours into it the front hubs started leaking (I believe that this was after a few top speed occasions of roading the tractor.) When I tore it down I discovered that the seals had been installed backwards and that the bearings and king pins were in terrible shape. The dealer, true to his word, covered the cost of parts completely. However, I had to have new kings pins made and locate the bearings etc and then he paid me back. If I were not confident that I could repair anything that might break on it I would not have purchased it. Now I run 90 wt and the only leak is out the breather tube. Over all I am satisfied.

The two things that would really make me nervous about that situation is that 90 days is not that long to accumulate some serious hours on the tractor to make sure that everything is in order. (Do you already have the implements that you will use so that you can test it in every aspect.) And second, you are not dealing with the people that will supply the parts. You are dealing with a middle man.

To me the really simple question is this: If the seller ("dealer" in my lexicon is reserved for someone who actually does something more then just sell) does not warranty the tractor, how confident is the seller in the product? If he truly knows his supplier will back parts 90 days, why does he have to put it off on them? Why not just stand up and say "I'll provide 90 days parts warranty"? The answer to me would be that his experience with his supplier has not been good enough for him to go out on the limb on his own. This way he can lay back and just tell you his supplier is balking at providing the part....to me it's just another way of not taking responsibility.

There are too many dealers who warrant what they sell themselves...directly....for anyone to choose to buy from someone who sells in the manner described above. Heck, if all he's going to do is get you parts sent from Atlanta anyway, what does it matter if he's across the street or a 1000 miles away? Wouldn't you rather deal with someone with a well established reputation and references and a longer warranty?
