I'm looking at a JD X744 or a x495, and I'm wondering what changes were made to the Yanman for EPA emissions reasons over the years? Basically, what year is the best to buy?

I read that the 03-04 used the 1.0L Yanmar, the 05-10 used the 1.1L Yanmar and the 2011+ used the .9L Yanmar. I know there had to be emissions changes as they got newer, so I'm wondering what the emissions changes were and how they negatively affect the engine? I know todays Diesel truck engines suck because of the emmissions crap on them. Also, can some of the emissions stuff on the newer Yanmar's be removed easily?

Just looking for info so I can narrow down what model year machine to buy. I read that they are categorized by "tiers", but I don't know what year is in what tier.....

Thanks in advance!

Don't have a good answer for you but it seems all of these Yanmars are pretty good. I have the 2011 x749 with the .9l engine and it has been a great engine so far with a little over 300 hours.

I should mention that these engines are conveniently just below the 25hp mark where the larger 25 hp+ are required to have more emission requirements.

The changes in the years you mentioned are very minor. Really, the only changes made were displacement, the location of the fuel filter, and the fuel pump. The new 0.9L from 2012 onwards have an electronic fuel pump. Engines prior to this were mechanical. The fuel filter is located on the front of the engine on the new 0.9L engine. It used to be on the left side of the older Yanmars. The new 0.9L also has a new design in the lower portion of the block to reduce vibration and noise. It works like a charm. My 2012 X740 is much smoother and quieter than any Yanmar I have seen before it. The downside to the 0.9L engine is that it is quite a bit lighter than it's earlier versions, so you lose a small amount of traction on the front end. I doubt anyone would notice it, I don't.

As far as lacking power goes on the 0.9L, definitely not. This is a garden tractor that weighs 1,200 pounds. Having a 3 cylinder diesel engine in it is WAY overkill, even at 0.9L. The 1.1L engine had the most torque out of all the Yanmar's put into these tractors. However, it was only a difference of a few ft pounds. I can testify from my own experience, that my 0.9L does not feel any different than the 1.0L I ran for a few months a few years back.

Where things get sticky is the new 2013 engine. It has a fair amount of changes made to it regarding emissions. All I have heard from my local JD mechanic is that it has quite a few more sensors, and the computer is very picky about getting the machine running as clean as possible.

These are garden tractors, making 24HP. Trying to remove emissions equipment on these engines will do absolutely nothing for you. They do not make enough power to even begin to notice these kinds of changes. You do not have a DPF, or urea injection, and no EGR. So really, there is nothing to remove.

My personal opinion is do not let any of these engines determine your choice. Every single Yanmar that John Deere has ever put into these machines are awesome engines, with amazing reliability.
