Yanmar F22D front axle vented?

Greetings! My first post after picking up a Yanmar F22D last week and I just joined this community. I have a couple of questions concerning this tractor.

Is the front axle vented (or should it be vented)? This question stems from when I remove the front axle oil-fill plug I hear a 'swoosh' of air. Logically, I would posit that the front-wheel lubrication is vented because of the pressure that could build up (granted, the pressure is not too much) as this situation may cause oil to blow past the seals. I am just curious about this setup.

My second question applies to the purpose of a particular dash light. The location of the light in question is to the left of the key switch (it is on the same horizontal plane as the key switch) and is directly below the area in between the steering column and the throttle level. The light's lens is clear in color and circular in shape. I have the operator's manual for this tractor but nothing is said about this light (although the light is visible in the manual). I have searched this website for identification but came up empty-handed. This is NOT the button to test the function of the dash's display lights.

Take this as an opinion and not a fact. I don't think your front axle is vented. I don't have a clue about the light. Welcome to the forum! :thumbsup:

Most F FX Yanmars go whooosh when you open the front axle plug.

The light is a floor lamp, to shine on the controls behind your legs, it is supposed to shine when you turn on the headlights. If it doesn't shine, replace the bulb

I vented my 3810D front axle for that reason and it has all but stopped leaking in the various places it has been.

Thanks for the replys. The swoosh/whoosh will now cause me no concern and, Ernie, the light as a floor lamp makes perfect sense. I have not yet driven it in the dark but you can bet that I will be doing this soon!

this is to late maybe but some one may read it. I think your swoosh is from a vacuum? I don't own your type of tractor but many other axles and trans have a one way valve to will let out pressure But seal it when it cools down so there will be a slight negative pressure to keep down leaks. If you sink a hot diff. or axle in a cold creek you can suck water past your seals if you haven't disconnected the valve on the vent. so check your oil and don't wait to long.

Definitely it is a positive pressure. I slowly unscrewed the cap today and I could feel air escaping from the threads.

Look on top of the differential there may be a 1/8p plug at the very top. Mine had it, I am or seem to be the only one of these guys that has it dont know why that is but just look and see that would make venting it easy. I had a thread on how I did mine if you care to look back if you have the plug anyway?

A small 3/16 tubing could be installed in the fill plug off to the side of the dip stick if nothing else and then run a hose up to the side of the radiator would work just fine fwtw.
