Hi, This is my first post to this forum so I hope I don't offend anyone by asking a stupid question up front. Can anyone tell me what type of gear oil goes in the transmission on a YM 177? The capacity? What type of engine oil is recommended? My dad used to put Rotella T 40w in his compact Ford tractor. By the way, this Yanmar belongs to a family friend and received it in a divorce settlement. They had 2 but bought in auction without manuals. Thanks, Andy

Use a diesel rated oil.. 15w40 is popular for diesels, depending on your climate.
For tran/hyd/gear oil.. use a JD303/UTF/HYTRAN/HYGUARD spec oil. Available everywhere.. even wallmart as unitran fluid.. etc... Usually in the neighborhood of about 20-30$ per 5 gallons.
Not sure of the quantity for your grey 177.. but if it is like my 1700.. it will have a dipstick on the fill hole.. etc.

Thanks Soundguy, I really appreciate that info especially the telling me wally world carries it. As you know grass is growing. I have another question and maybe you've heard it before. Do you know anything about this 177 having a multispeed pto and if so which selection would be best for running a mowing deck type 3 pt mower not a bush hog. It's a great running tractor. Use first gear on the PTO for everything. At normal operating engine speeds that corresponds to 500 rpm pto speed--which is what everything operates at.

Ditto what cfox said. you probably have a lower setting, 500ish pto.. then 700something.. then 1000 somehting, if it is like most yanmar.. etc. use 540 setting.. etc..
And the wallmart oil is supertech brand.. will be calle duniversal tractor fluid or something similar to that.
