Tractor
2010D
Here are a couple of photos of my Grey Market Yanmars. They are both great little units that I use for my landscape business.
The larger is a Yanmar 2010D which is a 24HP 4WD with shuttle shift. It has a three cylinder diesel engine and is a dream to operate.
The smaller tractor is a Yanmar 1610D which is a 20HP 4WD tractor and is a powerful compact tractor that can fit through a 40" gate.
These tractors have been the one of the best purchases I have ever made. They are very affordable, reliable and well engineered. Contrary to popular belief, parts are available through numerous dealers. I hope this information helps anyone interested in a Grey market tractor.

Have you had any experience with a Yanmar tiller? There is a 5' one advertised for $500. I really need a 6' but at this price I could make do with a 5'.

I have a yanmar tiller on my "yanmar" its great. Has a bazillion depth options on it (almost all are ignored)
but works great. A couple of issues. Make sure its a 3pt hitch. Some are setup with 2pt hitches. Also make sure the shaft is going to be long enough. A lot of the yanmar tillers set real close to the rear wheels on the yanmars but due to 3pt legnths set back a bit from other tractors. The yanmar shaft most likely will not fit. They are great tillers. Solidly built, you can remove middle tines to and a back plate and wee/till around row crops.

Roy,
Yes, I have a Yanmar tiller. Before you buy one, you should first know a little about the tillers. They fit standard Cat. 1 linkage, PTOs, and work very well if they are in good condition.
Almost all of the Japanese tractors come with one of these tillers and they are designed for rice tilling. They are not designed as heavy as the tillers sold here in the USA. The reason is that the soil the till has been farmed for hundreds of years and is easy to work.
Look for overall condition especially around the bearing and seals. Check the gear oil for water and signs of internal rust. Some of the cultivation is done under standing water which can cause numerous problems. If the tiller you are looking at is in good condition and the work you plan to do is free of heavy roots or rocks it may be a good deal. Shop around at a few dealers who sell Grey market tractors. They usually have several laying around.

John,
I got the tractor from Robinson's Equipment who buys them by the container load. Generally, the tractors he gets are in very nice condition but a bit rusty. There is a picture of the smaller one (YM1610D) on his web site. I'll let you guess which one. When I got it, Robinson's had serviced it, attached the loader and given it a complete mechanical check.
When I got it home, I completely disassembled all of the sheet metal and sanded all of the rust and gave it a fresh paint job. A week later, my wife was a bit mad at me for spending too much time with the tractor and not with her. But as you probably know, these tractors are a lot of fun to play with.

Thanks,

To all,
I just realized that I did not include a photo of my next project Yanmar. This YM 2010D is a Grey market Japanese 4WD tractor. Before I got this one it must have had an easy life because it only had a bit of surface rust, no dents or dings. It has about 600 hours on the meter and runs great. I am trying to decide which loader to buy a Bush Hog or a Koyker. Does anybody have any experience with either?
Thanks,
Cameron
