Can you please give me an idea what is done to these tractors when they say "Remanufacture" - The only thing I've heard is "they get what they need"
The web link at Fredericks "Remanufacture" says "Work in progress - web page not completed"

I just wonder do they bore them out - new rings - or is it just all the peripherals (seals, filter, tires, seat, starter, paint etc)

Does your hour meter say 0, when you pick it up?

Thanks!

Fredricks does not claim to remanfacture tractors. They "refurbish" them. There is a big difference. Do a search on the forum. This subject has been discussed many times.

To my knowledge there are no such facilities for Yanmar. Anyone that claims this is flat out misrepresenting themselves. I can tell you for about of at least one dealer claiming to do all of that. It is totally false. I bought a YM1700 about 2.5 years ago from a dealer that claimed to rebuild the engines. Yhr hout meter had about 50 hours on it. I found out after I bought it that it was a "Vietnam Recon". To make a long story short I tore down the engine about a month ago. I doubt if much of anything had been done to it. It had a blown head gasket. I suspect that it may not have been torqued correctly. I am just about finished rebuilding it.

There are good Yanmar tractors out there and there are good dealers that sell and support them. Some of these dealers are active on this board. It is good that you are asking questions before buying. Get customer references that have had their tractor for a while (at least a year or two). Most are happy to start with. I was.

I wish I had found the forum before I bought my tractor. I could have saved a lot of money and greif..

Good luck with your search. If you or anyone else wants more information on the dealer experience please feel free to PM me.

Would you acccept the argument that a truck with a rebuilt engine should legitimately have the tachometer rolled back to 0 miles? Me neither, but that is the alleged theory of many of those selling vn recons.

If you want to know what process a tractor has been through, ask the dealer. If you want to know whether you can believe the dealer, ask for references. ALWAYS get references (and contact those references), including some a year or more old. Most people are happy at first. Anyone can post nice stuff on their website and say it came from happy customers.

My question has always been "why on earth would you rebuild an engine that was running alright?" The answer for me is simple....that tractor wasn't running alright. Buck at EFC has posted pictures of units that vn buyers were buying in some of the Japanese yards. Many regulars on this forum saw those pictures, and Buck had them on his website for a while, but he kept getting vicious emails about them so I think he removed them.

Here is a LINK to a seller's listings on tractorhouse.com There is no such thing as a 1989 YM1700.....but many of these sellers routinely mis-state the year of manufacture. Most of the dates for the Yanmar models in that ad are off by 10 years or more. So are these people just ignorant of the actual manufacture date range or ......? Ask one of these sellers (or any of us..I'm willing--I'll sign one saying any red YM1700s we sell were made in 1977 or 78) to sign an affidavit re: the age or year of manufacture of the tractor.

Another thing to ask for (if you're there) is to see a parts book for each model. If they don't have parts books, how will they order parts? We provide each customer with a copy of that for their tractor.

Best protection you can give yourself is to get references and check them out.

The hr meter won't say 0 unless they had to replace the hr meter with a new 1. The hrs that are on the tractor will show on the hr meter.(THEY DON'T ROLL HRS BACK LIKE SOME DO) They generaly replace what is needed to be replaced. They (Fredricks ) don't bore them out . They don't buy tractors that are in this bad of shape for resale. Will you have seals that start leaking ?? Mabe .I did on the front end but, they were easy to replace. In my case, the tractor got a new clutch & throw out bearing, new or recovered seat , paint, filter battery. no new tires. You can ask them over the phone & they will tell you what they do to the tractors . If you don't (or can't ) work on stuff you may not won't to go grey as these are old tractors & you may end up with some problems. Fredricks' will send you parts under the warranty but, you (or someone) will have to repair. I can say without a doubt that I have been happy with my purchase .I only use a box blade & brush cut & saved alot over a new tractor

If you take a look at the posted link, note so many of these old Yanmars have the same date of mfgr, 1989. Strange, how could one dealer have so many used tractors of only one model yr??? Models like the 2210 models listed were made only one yr, 1977.

IMO, you run not walk away from dealers posting such false info.

Our sources from Japan tell us the 2210 was made in 77&78, with the 2210B in 79. There is a lack of clarity because the Japanese manufacturers (as far as I know, for all their tractor makes) did not keep nor care about model year information. There are/were some documents from Japan available listing dates of production for models, and I have seen these (but don't have one of the actual documents)...and these were consistent with the dates we use. Bottom line, none of the YM series were made in the late 80s or later. And yes, if you look through that publication, it is full of misrepresented tractors.
