Yanmar 187D
got a question! i have a yanmar 187d. is there any way to disable or by-pass the clutch safety switch? i think my switch is bad and instead of replacing it, i want to take it out all together. is this possiable?

I'm pretty sure it is, because my 1401D doesn't have one on it, but the bracket and everything is there for one. I'm guessing the previous owner(s) took it off.

I don't recommend it. Over 5 years I've done enough dumb stuff to appreciate that the minimal safety features on these things are needed.

I bought a new switch soon after I bought the tractor.. Not only was the old one unreliable, the previous owner had twisted bare wires together to jump it, and his mess was as unreliable as what he attempted to improve.

The contacts in the ignition switch were also bad, so starting was a very uncertain process. After replacing the clutch safety switch and the ignition switch, the innate reliability that Yanmar built in 30 years ago was restored.

I don't see how removing the clutch safety switch will improve the tractor.

i certainly see your point, i dont want to remove it just to remove it. mine is shot, and i need my tractor. this is not a long term fix. i want to bypass it until i can find one. do you know about what one cost? and can i find one at hoyetractor.com? thanks for the advice

You can get one from any of us selling parts. It always surprises me that more people don't bother to price out parts, especially high dollar parts, at multiple dealers. Make sure this is your part # 194197-52191 (old 194440-52191) as that is what the common one replaces. The less common one replaces 194201-52160 and the only application I have for it is the 1401. The first is around 25, the second around 40.

To bypass both the pto safety and the clutch safety switch. Could you run a new wire from the selonoid to the ignition switch? I never know if it is going to start and want to eliminate the safety switches from the problem and see if I have a bad switch. I have replaced the starter, battery cables, and the ignition switch already. Any ideas? It is a Yanmar 187D. Once, started it purrs like a kitten.

Thank you
Rick

Welcome to the forum. :welcome:

Not recommending you do this but for testing purposes you can pull the two wires from you safety switch/switches, connect those two wires and you have by passed the switch. There would still be the possibility of a loose or broken wire. After reading this over let me state I am talking about by passing the safety switch, not the key switch.

I would think you could run a wire straight from terminal C to you starter and by pass your switches. Again, only thinking this for testing purposes. http://www.hoyetractor.com/is52110-inst.jpg

A PO of my 276D put male/female connectors before the switch. I plugged them together for a temporary fix. Still that way years later. Works for me.

You can by-pass any switch for testing with an aligator clip wire from Radio Shack
