Yanmar ym1100d block heater options

Even though Fredricks did a total restore/rebuild of the tractor, Talking with them, they flush out the hydraulics with diesel as the Yanmars were put to use in rice paddies. They then refill with the good J20C store branded stuff too. After 2 years, I changed the fluid. It was all black like Jed finding Texas tea. This was expected. I've check the fluid just before winter and it's still clean and clear.
Interesting that yours came out black. I replaced the YM240 (manual transmission) fluid when I bought the tractor in 2003 and I don't remember color but the 'strainer' (filter) was so nasty I had to replace it. (Photo below). That may have been the first UTF change ever, the tractor was clearly badly neglected for at least a decade before I bought it. After seeing the filthy filter I flushed the transmission extensively with diesel. Then after ten years, 2013, I replaced the UTF again even though it looked decent. No water, minimal crud trapped in the strainer. Just Preventive Maintenance. Last year 2019 I had to drain the transmission to replace the right axle housing - described in a post on here - and the fluid looked great. I drained into a fine mesh filter to trap debris and saw almost none. Re-used the fluid. Seems to me if these aren't parked out in the rain then the UTF is good for at least a decade.

That's manual transmission. The Powershifts deserve better fluid. Those must be shedding some clutch face fiber and they need the fluid to go through tight spaces, in the shifter valve body and the hydraulic activators for the clutches. Plus they need multigrade to provide uniform performance at varying temperatures. I think these at least need the filter replaced at the recommended intervals to avoid problems, and the UTF after a few years.

Black, but a transparent green-black. Not sure if it was the diesel residue left in the rinse-out. Yes, the YM2610 has the PSH. When the lift arms began to stutter and placing the PSH into a slected gear didn't move the tractor, I knew the filter was coated. Thus, the following days later changed the fluid and all was working great again. I have the re-useable filter type in the YM2610. It uses a stainless cartridge with holes and an olefin membrane sleeve over the cartridge. To clean it, one uses diesel and a med-grade nylon soft bristle brush.

My pixs are located here of both the filter type and the drained fluid ...

My Hyd. screen looked worse than that!! At least it was intact just a little bent and flat in the middle. Pump Suction was my guess. I just replaced it.......

Mine looked almost new. But the fluid looked like crap.

The Hyd. fluid wasn't changed for quite a long time on mine. I bought it that way all intact ASIS. The strainer was a sure sign and the last Gal. or so of fluid was white and thick. Pretty Nasty.

Oh, I hate that white an thick stuff. My old Yanmar Deere 850 had that too. The good diesel mechanic said it's due to water trapped in the system. Glad you got the stuff purged out and a new filter with screen placed in there. Like California said, the Power-Shift Yanmars need a bit more TLC for the fluid.

If the lower hose is too short for that, then maybe Carey's magnetic heater stuck on under the pan is the next solution? Or simply a tarp and a light bulb, or a small space heater?

Before I replaced the badly-rebuilt starter I found on the YM240 when I bought it, I stuck a hair dryer and some PVC drainpipe into the air filter intake and ran that for a while before attempting starting, a couple of times when I needed the tractor in 'cold' (+40 :)) weather. This won't help cranking speed but warming the cylinders improved the initial combustion.

Living in Alaska I assume this is common knowledge - putting the charger on the battery to warm it will increase the amount of current it puts out.

When I eventually bought a new starter I got one spec'ed for a 40 hp 4 cylinder Yanmar, that had the same gear teeth etc as my 24 hp YM240. That cranks it frantically. I think it would even start a badly worn engine, pushing off the inevitable rebuild for several years.

And I assume your Thermostart is working properly.

I have a Kats magnetic oil pan heater trouble with it is it will partially fit underneath the oil pan on a 2420D due to hardware in the way. I stick it on the side of the pan not the best fit either. Might be better to try one of those thin stick on type pan heaters.
