I'm baffled.
I just bought a (second) YM186D.
Previous owner said he had never seen the idiot lights come on under any conditions. Headlights and horn dead too.
I got water in the ignition switch washing the tractor so I squirted in graphite lock fluid to flush it out. (Maybe this is conductive?) This made the key turn easily and apparently fixed something. Now turning the key to Start made a relay sound, and the idiot lights show the normal pre-start test lightup. (Which the previous owner said he never saw). But letting the key go back to Run, kills power to the idiot lights.
Only if I twist the key to Start but leave the clutch out (clutch safety switch blocking power to the starter) then the dash is powered and the idiot lights work as expected. Charge light comes on as rpm drops to zero; Oil comes on a moment after engine stops. (Temp light is stuck on when the other lights are working normally but I think Start is the test position for the Temp light so not an additional problem).
Learned one thing from this, the Charge light behavior shows the alternator and regulator are working. Oh and there's oil pressure. So this electrical issue is no more than an annoyance, not an expensive mess.
Service Manual doesn't cover my set of symptoms. It does say this model has a relay related to the idiot lights. I heard the relay engage on this tractor but have never heard it on the first YM186D.
Ok if you're still reading this you're likely as confused as I am.
I pulled the ignition switch and found it wired all stupid compared to my other YM186D. So I moved the wires around to match my other YM186D. Now it conforms to the Service Manual's wiring diagram and switch illustration.
Test again. With the key in Run position the headlights remain dead. The horn works for the first time, proving power through the fuse panel. I see 12.5 volts at the output of the fuse that powers the instrument panel. But now the dash lights are dead at any key position - Start, Run, Off.
After posting this, I'll stare at the wiring diagram to try to deduce what could cause the pattern of symptoms I've observed.
In summary the idiot lights worked (but only at Start position) when the ignition switch was wired wrong, then after correcting the switch connections I have power through the fuses but only the horn works.
Any advice?
