Hello and thanks for all the information available on this forum, as I have posted before I'm almost 63 years young and have never owned or operated a tractor of any kind.(not counting driving an old model ford,and that was in 1962, from where my dad bought it to our home 30 miles away because we didn't have a trailer) I have been looking-searching and reading about what to buy for about 6 months and have almost made the decision to buy a YM2010. Problem is the only dealers I can find are 2 located here in Texas. One is only about 50 miles away and the other is about 350 miles away from my home close to Houston. Both of these dealers sell Yanmars that have been reconditioned in Vietnam and use the loaders with the big blue V on the arms of the loaders. The one nearby has a (YM 2010 is a 24HP 3cyl. Diesel 4WD Tractor that is equipped with a new Front End Loader) with the shredder and box blade $850 and $495 as add on plus tax.. Question should I look at the used Kubotas and John Deere's and the Ford/New Holland because all I've read clearly indicates to stay away from these from Vietnam and because of price I would rather buy used than buy a Chinese tractor.
I'm really ready to make a decision and there are many what seem to be good deals on Craigs List, but I would much rather have a reconditioned that has a warranty(more than 90 days) than some one else's problem. Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

My dad put me on a tractor when I was still in elementary school. Fast forward 50 plus years and a couple of career changes. I now own a Kubota and love driving my tractor. Do you really want used?? Used tractors hold their value very well. For just a bit more money you could own new. For me new was a no brainer because I could buy with no money down and 0% interest. But I digress. Since you have never owned or operated a tractor my suggestion is to buy a tractor that has the HST transmission. Push a pedal with your toe to go forward, push a pedal with your heel to go backward. No shifting manual gears. In certain situations that is far safer than gear. Works really great when mowing. Your purchase decision should also include how you are going to use the tractor. Mowing? Gardening? Dirt work? I find a front end loader absolutely indespensible. Also make sure you buy enough horsepower!!

as stated above,new is very nice and easy to acquire however.... used can be a lot less expensive, thats considering you can live with repairs the unit may need,thats the big issue. If you are handy and dont mind the occassional headache that comes with used you can definetly save some green. I am sure you will get a mixed reply on this topic......

Good luck w your search, Most smaller tractor brands including Yanmar are hard working,reliable tractors and will hold there value pretty well

Budget was a big deternining factor for me. That is the reason I went with a vn refurbished ym2002d from LCI in Wills Point, Tx. They have now gone under. I did not do any research before buying. Didn't even know what grey market meant. Short story is over $2000 later I now have a reliable tractor. Much of that came out of my pocket. I really consider myself the exception rather than the rule. Many vn buyers purchases have turned out good.

What makes these old Yanmars so attractive is their simplicity and what they are capable of with their small size. Just remember your model was manufactured in 1980-81 making it 30+ years old.

After proof reading this no doubt it would lead anyone to run from the vn tractors. My tractor had a 90 day warranty which wasn't long enough. If I had it to do over again and could get a 1 year warranty as some are advertising I would probably do it again. A lot would have to do with the reputation and research on the dealer.

used tractors hold value but i paid $4k for my 24hp yanmar, way less than anew tractor. & did get a vn but knowing everything i know i would of got a fredericks model for the same price. but at this point it not only does not matter cause its been 3 years but more so nothing happened to my vn model that the dealer did not fix. things like volt regulator and bad 3pt valve and leaky radiator. all fixed under warrenty. tractor has done all i asked and more. there are plenty of us that have done ok with vn models, but the fredericks or other us reconditioned ones are not without fault. i know 2 members on here with worse problems than i have that got their tractors reconed her in the US fron 2 diff dealers. Just remember its something your gonna have to work on if u get a used 30 plus year old tractor. but if ur planning on going out to buy a us reconed model with powershift and a new loader there is no question in my mind id buy a used nh or jd or maybe look at a new kioti or manihandra.

My YM2210D is a VN tractor that needed several repairs. these repairs were inexpensive but time consuming. The biggest drawback was that the engine was not original to that tractor and was mis-identified by it's model designation tag. It was later determined that my engine was from a smaller and older tractor but still bolted up the same. Now that I know what I have, it works fine. The dishonesty of the importer is disheartening.

My YM2210D had an early 2TR20 engine with the 2T90 ID tag on the engine. I forget what tractor originally used that engine.

A tag on the fuel pump had the correct tag (2TR20) on it but it was painted over. My engine was originally black but was repainted with the 2T90 green. To further confuse the issue, my fuel pump used banjo bolts on the fuel lines. The early, 2TR20, engines used banjo bolts. Fuel pumps on the later 2TR20 engines used hose end fittings that screwed directly into the pump.

2TR20 was early - very early - YM2000. The green one.

That's outright fraud to rivet a 2T90 id plate onto it.

No doubt, but it was still a bargain and it is quite reliable.
