Ok new to here but not to tractors,

Just don't to Yanmar's

I found a YM240 that they "say" needs a injector as it only runs on one cylinder they haven't done any engine checks on it, and are selling it as is,

So my question is it worth 2100 bucks and if so what does the experts here think might be the problem.

Also I want to use this to pull a few smaller logs out of the woods and run a 4-5" bush hog (should I be looking for something else)

Thanks in advance.

Welcome!

4 ft bush hog is ideally matched, some people run 5 ft and say it works ok. In my experience tall wet grass then mowing uphill can load down my 4 ft rotary mower / ym240 all it wants. For logging you probably want loaded tires and more ballast then it should work fine.

I think you can get it started on one cylinder and run it enough to verify the transmission, hydraulics, charging system etc work as intended. You might need to assist the battery with a jumper from another vehicle to make it crank fast enough to start this way. The seller will probably illustrate starting technique: 10 seconds Thermostart (manifold heater) then crank with compression released, after it is spinning fast drop the compression release and the inertia of the flywheel will assist the starter.

One dead cylinder can be anything. Injectors are about $100 each. It could also be a burned valve or bad head gasket, simple to fix. If no problems found there, then l'd pull the pistons to look for cracked rings. These little two cylinder engines are pretty simple to tear down. Running ok, I think its worth over $3k, over $3500 if it has a loader. More if its real clean which is rare. Most look thrashed after 35 years but run fine. At $2100 you have enough margin to afford whatever it needs to prepare it for service, but needing repair limits the number of people who will consider it so you might be able to negotiate a much lower price.

i would want to be more in the $1500-1800 range. Like California says there simple to work on . But it may not just be a sinple injector, maybe like he said a cracked ring or a busted piston, meaning a partial rebuild and at that point you may as well just buy one in decent shape around $3200.

I have both a 4 and 5 foot bush hog for my ym2000 which is the exact copy of this but a grey model. It pulls the 4 foot in everything but the tallest and thickest grass in 7 out of 8 gears usually. The 5 footer is the light duty razorback model by bushhog. It will cut maintained fields easily at the same speed and as long as there not out of control and really tall and thick it cuts fine. the spots i know are thick or will require more power i just cheat in and take like a 4foot bite. I prefer the larger one as i can make better time and the spots that require less bite to cut effeciently are no more than 20% of the area i mow. so i just pinch in in those thicker spots and then cut the whole width on the rest of the field, allowing me to be more effecient.

2100.00$ and could have just a bad Injector. That would be a great find. Not much to the Ym 2000/US 240. I get impressed with the capability's of this model to the day. My ym2000 I gave 2800.00 for 7yrs. ago ASIS and only had to Rebuild the Starter was the biggest repair.
Finally I know I have my 2nd. gear on my PTO working. It would Jump out of gear but 1st. 540 US. was good. No big deal.
The neighbor bought a new Kobta. I seen the top of the Rop's going back and forth so I decided to check my mail. My guess 25-30G$. looks about 35hp.4Wd. Fel. FM. with side Discharge. He was trying to get ride of Row from the side Discharge.
Couldn't help it so I Threw down the 2nd. gear PTO. on him. Now that it's working I went from 2100rpm.1st. to 1600 Rpm. 2nd.PTO. and my FM is Hummmmingggg.....
1 pass with a 2800.00$ 35yr. old Tractor and a 600.00 FM. with Rear Discharge and my yard looks like a fairway. ;)
