Kubota M59, JD530, JD310SG. Restoring Yanmar YM165D
I was looking over some information from ten or 15 years ago and saw where I was considering buying Yanmar's mini-TLB model CDL 40. I didn't do so; bought Kubota's M59 instead....a much larger machine.
But I wonder if anyone does have a CDL 40 and if so, how is it doing? They sure looked like nice machines.

One thing I learned from owning a design and repair shop with employees is that when you buy tools, the features are ALWAYS more important than the price. In my kind of shop, solid design and extra features that work well will pay for themselves quicker than cheaper tool that will do less. And the employees are noticibly more pround of their work when they are working with good tools. So for good tools, I'll pay more but also demand more for the money.

In this case we looked at the Yanmar CDL 40, the Kubota L47 and M59, the John Deere 110, Cat 416, JCB midi and also at several brands of 50/60 hp tractors that offered decent loaders with BH to fit their 3pt hitch mounts. Ended up with the Kubota.

That JCB Midi Seemed like a stout machine. Did it feature a 3 Pt?

We have a CBL40 in the rental fleet at work. Fairly stout machine, hasn't asked for much over the years. It's getting up over 2000 (rental) hours, so we're looking to replace it, but there aren't that many machines in the 8000lb TLB class.

Only one I know of is the L47. I really wonder why JCB quit on the Midi, JD on the 110?

I wonder the same thing - especially on the JD110. There are a lot of JD-only guys out there, and the 110 was a decent machine. But they've all pretty much left the field to Kubota. Lucky for us that the Kubota TLBs are excellent.

It would be real nice if JD got back in the game with a new 110, as well as something to compete with Kubota's M62. Kubota pretty much has a monopoly on this market now.

However, I really wonder the reason they stopped making them as well. Was it lack of sales, lack of emissions, lack of performance, or something else? It seemed like such a niche market and I can't imagine a lot of demand for these, aside from those of us on this forum :)

Nice to see Kubota only improving and not dropping the line though! Now that the emissions hurdle is over, hopefully they concentrate more on improving other things on them. You know, like a CAB! And 10 more PTO hp.

It's an amazing machine! My neighbor a few doors down ... in the country has one.

I heard a distinctive engine noise last summer. It's only a noise that tells a person ... A Yanmar is nearby! So, I hopped into the car, drove a little ways down and saw the machine trenching out a second septic field for the families house. At the time, I had no clue why it was YELLOW and not green or red.

It's not a farm tractor, but more of an industrial tractor for commercial work.

I think the main reason why you don't see any competition to Kubota is largely because of the popularity of mini-excavators. It's pretty hard to compete with an excavator even in regular excavation work the only time I see a regular TLB like a Case 580 or John Deere 310 is during any utility installation work like fiberoptic, power, or gas. As an operator of over 20 years I find TLB's to be quite frustrating to use for things like digging footings, basements, and sewer and water work.
