When we built our house in 2006, I didn't have much money to put in much of a yard. We have a lot of clay and spread the little topsoil we had fairly thinly. I got grass to grow but every year it's getting thinner and thinner.

I need to add more topsoil. The question is, do I remove what I have and use all new top soil or can I add a couple inches and till it all to make a better situation for growing grass?

Consult with an agriculture extension agent. Even if you live in town, they can provide guidance on turf. The second step is to get a soil test. You may find that you need lime or different nutrients than you've been providing. A soil test will help you fertilize at the rates your lawn needs. The extension agent may also help identify any disease that your grass may have. Spring isn't a great time to do yard renovations for cool season grasses.

The next thing is to make sure you are mowing at the proper height for your grass type. Most folks mow too short for cool season grasses.
